Remember the feeding frenzy when Dale Earnhardt died? The local Nascar diecast shops were cleaned out in like hours of anything of his. There were photos in the paper of lines in the mall for Nascar stuff. Those shops reordered tons of Earnhardt stuff that then sat there, because in the couple weeks til they could restock the furor faded. All of those stores are gone now, and I still see tables of Earnhardt stuff at the flea market. I have a friend with a collectible shop and he still gets people trying to sell their collections of Dale merchandise, but he won't touch it, there's no market for it now.

I suspect Farrah prices will spike in a couple days...sadly, her passing has already been relegated to 2nd or 3rd tier news by the Michael Jackson death.
If that hadn't happened today, Nightline would be running a retrospective on her right now.
Jackson collectibles will spike but may hold on to some value, as I think his musical legacy will eventually overtake his behavioral & financial issues, since he won't be around to add to that part of his story anymore. Time & history have a way of changing perception...we remember Elvis for his early legacy & his music, and less for his death on the toilet & drug abuse. And we also tend to forget just how huge Michael was in other countries, we tend to think only in terms of his image in America. I just heard how his planned concerts in London were expected to clear over 400 million dollars. That's incredibly impressive.

I think it all depends on how the person dies.

For Farrah, her death was very slow and expected.
It didn't really shock people all that much and that's why I think her stuff wont sell as well as some celebs who die without any warning ie Michael Jackson, Carradine, Earnhardt and Steve Erwin.

It's gloomy ... but it seems to be the trend.

It ticked me off at first. It still does a bit. I do understand why they do it though. I saw one seller who must've been hoarding Farrah dolls (waiting for her to die), list like 4 at once within hours of her death. I saw one within an hour of her death with a BIN of $250!!!
Seems I recall these barely fetching $25 MIB last year.

Are you only upset when the sellers offer things at high prices? What if a seller starts something low and the BUYERS drive it up? Is this "unethical"?

I'm sorry, i just see these situations as simple cases of supply and demand.

Then start the auction at 99 cents instead of $49.99.

I actually want one...not as some morbid curiosity collectible...but to pay tribute to the lovely Farrah Fawcett...I'm also getting her famous poster (which I had back in the 70s).

                    It's inevitable.

I remember when Roy Orbison died.
He hadn't been in the news for decades, and all of a sudden he was "the legendary", "a god among musicians",...

And two months later, nobody talked about him anymore...
                    .
                    .
                    .
"When things are at their darkest, it's a brave man that can kick back and party."

It's no different than art enthusiasts paying more money for paintings done by an artist who recently died.

The whole "art" of "collecting" is knowing when to buy and sell - and for how much.

Yea I know, some people say "money doesn't matter"
Well, my responce is ... try not having any for a while and see if it still doesn't matter.
