Land of the Lost... family film?

I saw the Land of the Lost trailer one night while out watching "Crank"... a movie that works hard for it's R rating and very much aimed at adults. The LOTL trailer was full of the movies sex-jokes, profanity and the scene where the ape-guy fondles the girls breasts.

The next day, I took my kids to see "Monsters vs Aliens". The LOTL trailer came on... no profanity, sex-jokes or fondling. It was absolutely geared to entice kids to come see the movie.

Now I'm not a prude at all, but I think that this sucks for familys. If some parent takes their kid to see this movie because of the way it has been marketed to kids... that's just money-grubbing, anything for a buck WRONG.

I pity the parent that gets sucked into this Hollywood scam. Just rubbed me wrong, that's all.

I agree it is frustrating when a trailer and the movie don't resemble each other at all (and I've read online several reviews warning parents of exactly what you are talking about in this case).

I haven't seen the film yet (since I have a few fond memories of the original, I am not entirely sure how I will react to the remake) so I can't comment further...

Studios can remake things in whatever style they like (the box office will ultimately determine if it works case by case) but at least they should advertise it accurately!

Land of the Lost is a NO family film...because nobody is watching it.

Its box office results is an indication of that...a BOMB.

They're trying to have it both ways and stooping very low to get it.
In the end it will just be another Will Farrell flop everyone will forget about in a few weeks.

Tossed on Farrell's ever increasing pile of crap he calls movies

I took my kids (11 & 13), and we enjoyed it. The sex/drugs references are mild and goofy. They created no big problem for us. I do object to misrepresentation of films in trailers and through inappropriate ratings. A couple years ago the Adam Sandler vehicle I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry got a PG13 when it should really have been an R, and I thought this might have thrown some families for a loop.

I guess this isn't the first movie to pull a bait-and-switch, it was just especially glaring for me because on back to back days I saw the "adult" version trailer to entice that crowd and then I saw the "squeaky-clean, aw it's cute" version .

I definately don't mind the movie being what it is... heck, make an R-rated version with some serious dinosaur carnage and leading lady/ape-man bestiality for all I care...

Just don't trick parents into bringing little kids.

Yep, they advertised it for kids, but it is completely inappropriate.

I agree! But those lame Hollywood fools don't surprise me! Bring back the old school " Land Of The Lost" !

                  Hmmmm....

I think a big part of the problem is the rating system. It's pretty vague; especially when you consider kids. Some kids won't be bothered by things that bother others and some parents will definitely have dissenting views of appropriateness. But the rating system doesn't impart very much knowledge as to content. And it can be pretty vague itself at times. (There's a doccumentary about the ratings system: "This Film Has Yet To Be Rated" that covers things pretty well.)

The example you've cited makes me laugh. Yeah, they definitely want it both ways and in the end SOMEBODY'S gonna be dissapointed. That sort of equivocation has irritated me for years!

I saw it and I probably would let my kids watch it if they were a couple years older. It kind of reminds me of that Ringo Starr movie "Caveman" which I saw at ten and howled at all the (largely sophmoric) humour.

It's pretty so-so, I don't really blame Ferrell, this was bought him for four years ago when his man child performance was still pretty new. The biggest problem is it doesn't really have a story but is more a series of "hit or miss" vignettes. Some fun nods to the original show that likely most people didn't get. The best gag in the film for me was making grumpy smart. It suffers largely from sitting on the fence whether it's an adult comedy or a family friendly show.

I think movies shouldn't be able to advertise in a trailer until it is officially rated.

On the extreme, it would be very easy to make a XXX movie look like a G movie by some clever trailer editing.

I'm not big on censorship, but the movie industry has a history of sinking to new lows and they need ever increasing censorship to keep them in line.

One way to do it is a PG or stronger movie's trailer should NOT be shown during a G rated performance.

                      Also,

I've noticed, even with movies like Transformers 2, there are two sets of TV commercials. One airs during adult programming or on channels that just have shows for adults, and it has a much darker context, more explosions, violence, etc. On Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, etc, commercials for the same movie have a different, friendlier voiceover, and they emphasize the fun stuff more, like Bumblebee dancing, and the robots transforming, etc.

Now, Transformers (the first one anyway), aside from the violence and a bit of salty language wasn't what I would call inappropriate for kids, but they are definitely skewing the ads depending on what demographic is watching.

I never did see the "raunchy" ads for LOTL. I'm glad I heard from you guys it wasn't kid-friendly...and it sucked.
