because of the sun's light being refracted due to the angle the sun is facing relavent to the earths position. the light changes colors according to the earth position hence why the sky appears to be orange/purple when the sun sets.

The answer to many of these questions is simple. There was no cable TV or internet. People had a lot of time on thier hands. Also it could have been a matter of social class experimentation. Master says to servant, "Here, eat this slimey thing i found in the ocean."
