These have been spinning on my turntable:

Judee Sill S/T Lp on Asylum-- Absolutely gorgeous SSW Laurel Canyon orchestral folk masterpiece.

Battered Ornaments "Mantle Piece" on Harvest-- Late 60's UK psych brilliance!

Kenneth Higney "Attic Demonstration" on Kebrutney-- New Jersey truck driver assembles musicians to lay down "demo" version of his "songs" and comes up with one of the more bleak loner testimonies ever put to wax....

Neil Young "Trans" on Geffen-- Generally dismissed as one of Mr Young's weaker efforts--I've always found it fascinating. Neil Young with a vocoder? Yes!

Michael Hurley "Hi Fi Snock Uptown" on Raccoon-- Can never go wrong with Hurley.....
Damn Matt, you have me intrigued with this Higney fellow. Will seek him out.

You have to remember at the time "Trans" was considered the dagger in the coffin. After a slew of gems in the 70's Young put out "Hawks and Doves" (which I think is terrific) and the lightweight "Reactor". These weren't on par with what Young enthusiasts were use to. Think about it, what one artist could you name put out as many substantial records throughout the 70's as ol' Shakey? "Trans" was an ambitious nightmare to many. As years go by I appreciate it more and more and I hope the same goes for those naysayers who trashed it when it came out. We R in Control!!!

I love "Hi Fi Snock Uptown" but there's something about the less appreciated "Armchair Boogie" that still gives me that warm feeling that no other Snock record does. I could never understand why the critics have always dismissed that one. Btw, he has a new one coming out in September.

In my cd player are new cds by ---

    Okkervil River
    Wilco
    White Whale
    Andrew Bird
    Frog Eyes
    Feist
    Peter, Bjorn and John
    Blitzen Trapper

It's been reissued on CD. My vinyl copy set me back nearly $100, but I'm weird like that. It's definitely not for everyone. Bass player and drummer seem to be playing different songs. Higney's voice is lifeless and monotone. Out of nowhere come crazy sonic burst of guitar. Lyrics always start off kinda hopeful but by the end there is always some bleak world view. The funny thing is Higney's whole purpose was to shop these songs around to other artists! Unbelievable.

I've always heard that he made this record to appeal to his disabled son who seemed to respond to synthetic electronic noises. Anyway, yeah, the record ain't no After The Goldrush or anything, but still a blast to listen to.

Actually, I think my favorite Hurley is "Snockgrass" because it contains perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever with "O My Stars". It kills me every time. I'll keep the look out for the new one.

You diggin' the new Wilco? I've only heard it once, but thought it was pretty great. Me and friend were agreeing that it has a "classic" feel to it, perhaps a little less experimental than previous efforts--but not predictable in anyway. Nels Cline's guitar work is pretty awe inspiring....

This is one I want, but haven't picked up yet.

Recently I've been swapping music with a neighbor I've gotten to know. He gave me a stck of music and in making him a half dozen mix cd's I've been listening to a lot of stuff I hadn't in a while.

Switchfoot - Oh Gravity (the last cd I bought)

Cowboy Junkies (I saw them a couple weeks ago so I've listened to quite a few of their albums recently)

Sun Volt - Trace (sort of an alt-southern rock band that was in my friend's stack)

Big head Todd and the Monsters - Sister Sweetly (Great album)

Chior - Speckled Bird (The longer I've owned this the more I like it)
Evildoers tremble at the name... Aaron

I've got an eclectic mix in right now, and I've been hitting the shuffle button alot on the old 5-disc CD player:
          1. Wanted: The Outlaws
          2. Bryan Adams: Unplugged
          3. Bob Seger: Against the Wind
          4. Steve Miller Band: Greatest Hits
          5. The Highwaymen: The Road Goes On Forever (10th anniversary edition)

I've always leaned more towrds seeking out specific songs I liked than any one alblum. A few I've been listening to lately are

            "Connected"-Stereo MC's

            "Moving In Stereo"-The Cars.

            "Buttons"-Pussycat Dolls

            "Physical"-Olivia Newtown John

            "Panama"-Van Halen

            "Rock & Roll All Nite"-KISS

            "I Feel For You"-Chaka Khan

Aside from music, sometimes I'll just listen to certain podcasts on my way to work.

              Hmmmm....

Found some good albums the other day:

-Triumph and Agony by Warlock. (I NEEDED a digital copy of "All We Are.")
-Dirty Weapons by the Killer Dwarfs
-the newly remastered version of Secret Treaties by the Blue Oyster Cult; with the extra songs.

              And found some specific songs:

-Call of the Wild by Company of Wolves
-Runnung on Ice by Billy Joel

              Don C.

My favourite albums at the moment which I play all the time are the latest from John Mayer, Prince, Crowded House and The Pernice Brothers. Joe Pernice must be one the most underrated songwriters out there at the moment.

"Icky Thump" - The White Stripes
That's right Neil, the White Stripes. I saw these guys at the Garden a couple weeks ago. Not sound corny, but they really reminded what a live band should sound like. I love that raw, bluesy rock!

"Release The Stars" - Rufus Wainright
"Pieces of People We Love" - The Rapture (my girlfriend put that one there)
"WWI" - White Whale (this one just seems to hang around)
                  WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

I've been going back and forth from Tina Turner's greatest hits to Tom Jones greatest hits then to Everlast's "White Trash Beautiful". Real good stuff there.

The Wilco is sweet. It's so pure and the songs are some of Tweedy's best. Yeah, it certaintly has that classic feel to it. I hear The Faces, Steely Dan, Stones and Van Morrison to name a few. I'm simply in love with it.

"Snockgrass" and "Long Journey" are by far Hurley's best. Those two records have been in my rotation for the past 10 years. I love that guy!
