I am the type of person that wants it both ways. When I heard that Lucas was updating effects for Star Wars, I was pumped! Then I heard he wanted to make sure the originals will never see the light of day anymore in quality formats (the outdated transfers of the originals that he grudgingly put on a DVD alongside the special editions do not count. I am talking about a DVD made from a new high definition transfer) I was not happy.

But with the original Trek series, the latest blu ray release has original and new effects versions which is the way I like it. I have lots of fun toggling back and forth between old and new effects.

I don't want the original versions of these to go away because I want to preserve what the original makers struggled to put up the screen. I want to get in touch with the feelings I had when I first saw these original effects, before the matte lines were pointed out to me and I noticed they were switching between 2 versions of The Enterprise.

With modern technology I can have it both ways and that's the way it should be.

Sure. But that's more of an "education" issue....and more of
a "perservation" issue....not an issue of "equality for new TV/movies
and older TV/movies". There's only so much "old" stuff that
can take precedence on modern 2009 TV.

The stuff that gets made in 2009 should be allowed to flourish and be the
center of culture in 2009 just as whatever was pertinent in the past was
the focus in the past....when it was actually made.

Again, that's an issue of perservation/education...because it's more
      "historical" than anything else.

A while ago, I was watching Kong ('33), and my niece said "they stole that from Jurassic Park. Sigh....
I think it'd be easy enough to show/explain the distinction between
two movies released FIFTY years apart from each other...that is,
if you feel the need to do so.

That's not grounds to worry----Jurassic Park is more your niece's
"point of reference" because she's closer to TEN years old as opposed
      to FIFTY years old

---Jurassic Park is more "hers" because of it's age and I think that's cool.
If she's into King Kong (1933) then that's a bonus

And WHAT'S "wrong" with that exactly? That mindset doesn't mean that
new stuff is particularly "better". It's merely someone's personal preference
based primarily on when they were born.

If you love your Porsche, you love your Porsche---
why someone should be "obligated" to become acquainted
with the invention of the wheel is beyond me...

      ENJOY your freakin' Porsche---

the invention of the wheel and all older cars served their purpose.

      old movies served THEIR purpose

Yes...t's 2009 and there's no way around that fact
