    Pippi Longstocking

In a time for me before Star Trek, before Megos, in a time of Seseme Street, Electric Company and Mr. Rogers I had my unqualified first crush.

She was a super strong, tomboyish rebel. She was sort of a strange but cute looking girl with red hair pulled into tight braids. She had buck teeth in the middle of freckled cheeks and was dressed like a bag lady with mismatched stockings.

Yes, in the early 70's, I saw the Pippi Longstocking movies at the theater and thought she was great.

Pippi Longstocking started out as a series of children's books. The first film adaption of the books was in 1949. The author of the books, Astrid Lindgren didn't like that adaption. The 1970's movies were actually edited down versions of a Swedish-West German Pippi miniseries done in 1969 and Lindgren had a more direct involvement in the miniseries.

Inger Nilsson was Pippi in these shows/movies and overseas (where Pippi is more popular then she is in the USA) it seems she still is a remembered nostalgic pop culture personality (but it's hard to glean too much about her because almost all the stuff I find about her is in another language)

Inger as Pippi and a more recent picture.

After the early 70's Pippi movies, there was an Soviet Pippi film in 1982, an American one in 1988 and assorted animated Pippi's in the 1990's

HEY! You are talking about my first crush!

But seriously, I think the 1980's Pippi (Tami Erin) was actually too cute and fresh faced (not to mention a little too old). Pippi was supposed to be a little rough around the edges.

Not that I don't like Tami Erin, especially now:

But Inger's Pippi seems more true to the character.

I have some Pippi post cards I grabbed in Germany, I used to watch those movies on Channel 2 some Saturday afternoons. They were wonderfully hypnotic.

Ever seen the SCTV parody "Pippi Longsocks"?
