Can I apply for the position of biggest loser myself?

20 years ago, I wrote a story about a group of people with special abilities, hunted down by the secret organisation that created them.
One of the characters didn't have his ability under control.
My book ended with the main character almost going 'nova' and nearly taking the whole world with him.

I was so happy to see Heroes. Not.

    Loser!

Where exactly do you "deposit" your copyrights?
I'm just finishing another book, and I'd like to protect this one well.
This time, I don't want to wait until they beat me to the punch.

It's the story of a guy with the same abilities as a spider. He lives with his Aunt.....

You don't deposit them anywhere. My management is Mirage Entertainment. My lawyer purchases several author writes to material and trademarks that I come up with and it is logged into an information system with a date on it. That way if something "turns up" and becomes super famous and has a 85% likeness (there are a lot of rules to this) to your project/design or whatever. You have to prove how they "stole it" from you. (Internet, friend with a big mouth or whatever....)

If you don't have a lawyer but I would suggest having a lawyer being involved. It makes things a little more solid.
