Yeah, I saw my grandmother die from it several years ago. It was not pretty at all, and the end was very sad. Certainly not a way I would want to go.

Smoker since about 16. Have tried on many occasions to quit but just keeps coming back. A buddy of mine stopped smoking with some doctor prescribed pills that make you throw up when you smoke. Think I will pass on that and set the calender very soon when I will have smoked my last cigarette. 1 pack of marlboro's are $7.15 now in california. Stupid but I still manage to afford them. All I can say is soon. Not so easy but I gotta try.

I am in the process of quitting again. I have started taking prescribed medication Champix this week...after walking up a very steep driveway today I couldn't help thinking what a great idea quitting is...for me.

I do not smoke and have never tried. My parents used to smoke when I was little (they both quit years ago). But my grandparents smoked and let's just say they left this life way too early.

I have no problem with people who smoke (as long as you are respectful of me and don't do it around me). The Mego Meet suite is a great example of this. Members who smoke will go outside and smoke one so the rest of us don't have to smell it, even though the room might be a smoking room. I for one really appreciate that. I also commend anyone who has quit or is trying to. I know it cannot be easy.

I do have a problem with people who smoke and then blame the tobacco company for them getting/being sick. You have no one to blame but yourself.

I have never smoked, never will. I remember as a kid my stepfather smoked in the car. Me and my sister would pull our heads down into our shirt collars to avoid smelling and breathing the smoke.
I can't stand the smell of it. I can't stand being around people who are actively smoking. I can't stand the stale smell on people's clothing, hair and breath. I hate being in a person's house who is a smoker.
I ended a relationship once almost entirely based on the fact that she smoked (and lied to me about it). Somehow she used enough air fresheners, breath mints, odor sprays and candles to hide it from me which I didn't think was possible.
That said, I don't deny anyone their choice to smoke. Just don't do it around me or expect me to hang around with you if you do.

I'm also among the " I've never tried it" bunch. I grew up in a house with 4 heavy smokers (mom, dad and 2 uncles that lived upstairs with us). They smoked everywhere, even in the car in the winter with the windows rolled up.
One of my uncles died in 75 of cancer, my dad followed in 76, I was 9 years old then. The second uncle quit smoking after that and he lived to be 72. My mom still smokes about a pack a week. She was diagnosed with cancer about 3 years ago, it's in remission for now after a bunch of radiation and kemo.
The good news is my girlfriend hasn't had a smoke in about 6 months, after helping me cope with my mom she just didn't want to smoke any more. It took her a few tries, but the last 6 months have been nice, at least for that.

The cost of cigarettes that are buying is mostly taxes that go to health care programs like SCHIP (so we are told that's where the cigarette taxes go anyway). So while they may end up costing the health care system a bit at the end of their life, they ought to get something back, they have been paying into it for years.

Tried smoking a bit when I was young but never really got hooked. I just didn't like it. But I don't like how the smokers have gotten marginalized, to the point where they can't even smoke in bars in this state (NY) anymore. I know about the second hand smoke argument but there is so much contradictory info on the alleged effects that I think it has gotten a bit politicized.

This kind of policy helped me to stay quit. It'll be one year on Saturday!

Even when I was a smoker I had no problem with being forced to go outside to smoke. Heck, I refused to smoke inside my own house... That just goes to show how much I resented being a slave to my addiction. So when I quit I felt like I was reborn! I enjoy the ease of breathing and I am conscious of being physically stronger and having WAY more stamina.

I used Wellbutrin this time around, but what was the decider for me was that whenever I had a wheeze, if I cleared my throat, the wheeze wouldn't go away...

                          But,

As it is now, smokers are being treated very unfairly.

I'll tell ya, I am not a fan of cigs, and my wife smokes like crazy. I'm always on her case to try giving it up. But I also know enough to realise that it's not an easy thing to do so I don't give her too much grief about it. But since cancer runs very strong in her family it worries me a bit.

But, I agree with you 100% on everything you said. I think smokers are getting treated unfairly, they're really going overboard with it and like you said, if they're gonna go after it that strongly then either make it illegal or back off a bit.

We all know the tobacco companies all conspired to try and get an entire nation addicted to their product ... Which they pretty much succeeded as of the 70's ...

Today, the companies are going to court, paying fines and going out of business ...

But also today, their victims are being treated as they are.

It's like not only putting a robber in jail but also his victim.... because he was walking in a dark alley and deserved what he got.

There seems to be so much sympathy for drug addicts and drunks today, but smokers don't get any because smokers are bad people.
