    America's 15 most dangerous cities

    Top five...

    Here's the complete list...

    http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/23/mos...?partner=yahoo

I'm actually surprised that my hometown of Oakland is not listed...especially after four police officers being shot to death recently.

    ***UPDATE***

Oh, I just checked the fine print again...these are for cities with more than 500,000 residents...Oakland has 397,000...so that's why it's not on that list.

Sadly, I could guess Memphis and Detroit as 1 and 2.

        Vegas

Sucks! I live 15 mins from Las Vegas which ranks # 4! Here in Vegas we do have a horrible gang problem! Some areas you must avoid even at daylight.

Juarez (1.5 million) is the deadliest city in Mexico...it had 1600 murders last year...so American cities are child's play in comparison.

How are things there on the main strip? I visit Vegas a couple of times a year. I love it! I have even given it serious thought some times about selling off my current properties and moving to the Skye. One of my concerns other than the crime of course is the mud slides. What is your opinion being that you live in the area?

Why not? Especially since the casino business there was started by the Mafia, lol.

They count the outskirts of Detroit in the total; otherwise I'd be surprised if Detroit still had 500,000 people in it! There's been a mass exodus the last couple of years.

Got that right. With the automotive industry crippling this state and unemployment jumping to 12.6%, people are getting out!
Very sad for a state that was pretty nice

I didn't read the entire link, but what is it based on, because New Orleans is one of the top (if not top) murder capitals of the country?

                          Vegas

Yo whats up? The main strip is actually pretty safe from any serious violent crime, of course anything can happen, but most of the crimes that i seen on the strip are hookers, Street fights and cars getting stolen from the casino parking lots. But the city knows that the Strip is the Vegas economy and they cannot let it fall to pieces. whenever i'm at a casino or on the strip i feel pretty safe.

Like any city there are areas you must avoid! Most are in North LAs Vegas and East Vegas.

I live in Hnederson, 20 miles from the strip. My area is pretty safe. Once and a while a robbery, stolen cars but so far and hopefully it never gets me!!

But overall i guess Vegas is just ok! The schools are not that great, way overcrowded! And the junior high and High Schools all have gang issues. The majority of the dangerous gangs end up being illegal aliens. Alot of them come here for work, many are idiots who of course choose crime!

The Vegas economy is funny, it was hit hard, yet so was all of America. But at the same time almost every casino is expanding. And in the next 2-4 years they claim 20-30,000 new jobs will be available.

A new Casino named " M " just hired 1200 people, the Hard Rock is currently hiring 1900-2200 people and the MGM project called " City Center " is hiring at least 12-15,000. So yes the economy was hurt, but there is much growth.

Property taxes are very low! And right now you can get a killer brand new house with the works for like 170-250,000.

If America doesnt hit a depression then Vegas will do awesome!

I'll just stick with my sleepy little Canadian town. Whenever I read stuff like this, I appreciate it more.

Vegas and Atlantic City are very much the same on a different scale.

They both have their rich gambling areas, and surrounding slums with dirt poor people.
