Leotards work great in comicbooks but it's hard to take them seriously in a movie.
I had no problem with taking Christopher Reeve seriously or Tobey McGuire. I think it really comes down to how hard you try. This is for basically a cable network that doesn't want to spend any money on science fiction stories. So, taking that time to create a universe where the tights could be taken seriously, would just add dollars to a production. It really bugged me that they wore 21st century earth-style clothing on Battlestar Galactica. Whether that was cost cutting so they could have the SFX or planned, I don't know, but the Phantom costume just looks like they are being lazy and trying to just do something that is for a today's teen rather than taking the energy to create something that could be for everyone, more true to the source, and find that way to appeal to the target demographics, too.
    It's all good!

I could live with that suit...but that headgear...good grief...it's truly awful...like a bad scuba diver.

Seriously I'm tired of these type of stupid designs. One of the things that i did like from the Billy Zane Phantom movie was the slight modifications they did with the costume....but it stayed true the original design

I thought the Zane movie was great (of course I like Sky Captain and Rocketeer too!). The thing that brought the film down for me was Treat Williams cheeseball, hamfisted, over the top acting. He was a horrible villian. I guess this might point to the writing itself being to blame? Never the less, Zanes Phantom looked the part, and had all the other attributes to the character downpat. Better plot, better villian and this movie would have fared much better!

For the new version, I hear he's going to be stuck in New York (filmed in Montreal actually) so why not skip the outfit and go with his "city gear" from the comics--trenchcoat, dark glasses, and hat?

Sad thing; no, you can do superhero outfits just like in the comics. Well, SOME people can, but the studios can't. A friend of mine spends a lot of time in Japan, and he's sent me pics from different comic conventions of people in costume and a lot of them look JUST LIKE THE COMICS! And these were done by AMATEURS!

Problem is, that sort of thing is considered too simple I guess; so's the studios gotta go and busy them all up for film. It's not a technical problem; it's a theoretical one. Even the pics from the OLD Phantom movie are all busied up with that faint design on the outfit. Everybody since the 88 Batman HAS to wear that pseudo-body armour bodysuit. Preferably in black, or close to black.

That is so awful. Enough to turn me off seeing the movie altogether.

I think the script treatment is what hurt the Phantom movie. Billy Zane looked the part and I'm glad they stayed faithful to the comic cosmetics. But the story and character depictions were too flip. The villian is hammy at his best and virtually unwatchable at his worst. Some of his lines were just awful. That and I thought they underdesigned the "Phantom cave". It looked like something produced for an Adam West television project, instead of a major motion picture. I also think they should have kept the Phantom in dramatic lighting instead of the curious front lighting they used throughout...very strange production choice. If you notice from the previous production pics submitted, he looks very dynamic when the proper lighting is applied. That's true of most sci-fi characters. I like the character though so I will watch it, if for no reason other than to see the costume. He looks pretty cool. Remember, he was one of the first heroes!

I saw this on superherohype.com and the comments were pretty much the same . . . . it amazes me how the producers think they can reinvent something and disregard the "fan base". I think with superhero adaptations minimal changes are expected but let's keep the integrity of the original in place. This will fail . . . .
