It's simple and speaks to everyone. I hope they don't ruin that, it's what makes the book what it is to me. If they keep it simple, it will be brilliant. If they expand and provide "motivation", it will be terrible.
Hmmmm...they won't make this movie otherwise---even the Grinch
had motivation in HIS movie....and he was a jerk doing jerky things.
Max is a regular kid doing jerky things----so he'll have even MORE motivation
than the GRINCH to run away---and that'll keep him likable.
I thought the GRINCH movie was fun...it didn't really remind me of the book
all that much...but it was okay by me.
This looks just as good or better to me personally.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
It seems like ages since they filmed this, I drive past the studios where they made it every day and I'd just about given up on seeing it released.
There were lots of rumors of strange and wonderful things going on inside at the time, I think the story is in very safe hands with Spike Jonze. The guy understands subtlety and satire, and is plugged in to the Gen X zeitgeist like no one else. Can't wait!
They'll prolly ruin it like they did The Grinch and Polar Express. I'm not hopeful. Why can't they just take these wonderful books, make a 20 minute short, and put it together with a bigger story for kids like Harry Potter or Narnia?
.......or the smurfs live action by quention Overratedon
Yeah that PULP FICTION , RESEVOIR DOGS, and TRUE ROMANCE were soooo
undeserving of high praise

I think it's to T off longtime fans----or for money----not really sure

There's no way this is comparable to Grinch or Cat in the Hat. Those were total abominations. They took the source material and made fart-joke movies designed to sell Happy Meals.
This is obviously a more adult approach to the material and keeping good faith to it. I think it will probably be wonderful to some and be considered a failure overall because most people will take their kids to it expecting something lighter and more fun than this will be. I think most people will hate it. I can't wait.
Did nobody go see this this weekend? It was so good, any thoughts?
I was surprised at it's simplicity. I was expecting a more Tim Burton-esque look and feel to this film. This is not a Tim Burton film, nor does it look or feel like one. This is a Spike Jonze film and he's really put his stamp on movie making with this one.
The closest movie I can think to relate it to would be The Never-Ending Story, which was a childhood favorite of mine, but it's different in so many ways.
First, this movie didn't really feel like a kids movie. It could have been because I was at the 9:30 showing on a Friday night, but their were NO kids in attendance of approx. 30 people.
Secondly, it's NOT an adventure movie, and I think people will be mostly disappointed by this if they approach the movie like it's going to be one.
Remember, not really much happens in the book either, it's really a very simple story. It's not to say that NOTHING happens in the movie, just not very much.
I'm just so surprised (in the best way possible) that a major studio made this film. I'm not sure what the deal was, but it looks like they gave Spike Jonze "ca-rte blanch" (is that the right expression??) to do whatever he wanted. And THANK GOD for that. This movie could very well have been turned into "shrek" with farting monsters on skateboards quipping one liners.
THIS IS NOT THAT FILM!!
This is a film about emotions and the feelings of a 9 year old boy. When the movie ended, everybody in the theatre just stayed sitting in their seats in sort of stunned silence. It was a slightly surreal and sombre feeling that I haven't experienced at the movies in a long time.
People aren't used to seeing films like this, I think it's going to disappoint loads of people looking for a "fun" movie with "fun" monsters and a "funny" little kid who imagines a "funny" place and a nice big warm happy ending. It's wasn't depressing, but far from being the above.
The voice work was really a surprise as well, the wild things don't sound cartoon-y or like "crazy characters", they sound like people. just regular people.
I'r really curious to hear your thoughts about this movie, anybody bring their kids? what did the kids think?
It's a very good movie, done by a real filmmaker who cares about the source material. It's amazing how they fleshed the story out so well without changing the heart of the book. It might be a little slow going for younger children, but my kids really liked it. My little one was tearing up at the end, though he swears he was just sweating.
