My wife loved this book as a kid, so we had to buy it for our son. I'm sure we'll check out the movie.Comment

I'm not sure how I feel about this. This was my favorite book as a kid, and was always my favorite to read to my son when he was younger. I love the simplicity of it. There is no motivation for Max to be wild, beyond the fact that he is a boy just being a boy. There is no underlying "reason" or family issues or personal tragedy. Max goes through what every child did when forced to stop playing "I should just run away".
There is no hunt for the missing Max, no one knows he's gone, because really, he's not, just in his head. There are no parents to be seen. There is no hugs or love exchanged. Just the very powerful and simple acts of Max discovering he wants to go home where he's loved best, and he finds his hot food waiting for him, showing the parental love despite his misbehavior.
It's simple and speaks to everyone. I hope they don't ruin that, it's what makes the book what it is to me. If they keep it simple, it will be brilliant. If they expand and provide "motivation", it will be terrible. That's what worries me. It's a 30 minute story at tops if it were kept as I think it should be. They almost have to provide that missing motivation to make it a movie.
All that said, I think visually it looks really cool.Comment

Sure, judging by the trailer it looks like Mom has a new boyfriend...That was enough to make me want to go live on an island, as I recall.
It's only natural that he story be expanded to make a movie, the book is a very spare fable in it's way. But Sendak's work in general is always really fearless about presenting the things that disturb kids in an honest and beautiful way, so I think it's in keeping with the spirit of his work. I trust Spike Jones completely. This profile is no longer active.Comment

Spike Jonze is what is making me says "yes, can't wait". Not sure how I would feel if it were a different director.
I want to go watch this with the open-mindedness I had as a kid when I read the book. I don't want to watch it as a critic...but rather let the "inner child" in me enjoy the story all over again in a new medium. I can't wait.... this will be a "daddy day" for me and my two youngest boys.Last edited by Megospidey; Mar 26, '09, 10:12 AM.Comment
