HTD the movie suffered from the same problem HTD the comic book had- Steve Gerber was the driving force behind the character, his actions, and his world. Once he left the book, the character fell apart. Same with the movie. Howard is one of those rare characters who only performed correctly under his original creator, no matter what other talent tried to handle it.

The Spirit by Will Eisner, Plastic Man by Jack Cole are others that come to mind. Everybody thinks they know how to do these characters, but they never seem to be successful by anyone else. There is just some magic the originators had, some understanding that nobody else gets. Gerber had that with Howard the Duck.
Agreed , sometimes when the original creator/ writer / producer/ editor leaves something , It sometimes never lives back up to it's reputation.

I don't believe Wal-Mart is planning to sell "Howard the Duck". I work at the local Wally World and I check the upcoming releases on the computers in the back every week or so just to see what's coming up. There's no mention of the Howard DVD there. I ordered a copy at deepdiscount.com for $9.66.

I actually appreciated this film for what it's worth (given the age and the popularity of the character @ the time) will likely buy it, (as a HUGE Marvel fan). Personally, I think it's a test on the market, to see if might warrent a re-make in coming years. Given Marvels atonement in the Movie industry and planning several New movies in the next 3 years which will include SM4, FF3,SS, Avengers, Thor, Captain America, IM2, and others

I don't hate this film. For the time it was made it had a few things against it. First, the made Howard "cute". The used an actor in a suit when they should have used a puppet or muppett which resembles Howards true body proportions. If the film were made today it would be done CGI but they could've pulled off an animatronic Howard. It worked for ET.

The character was not as sarcastic or funny enough. The watered him down. The writers probably didn't understand the character enought to write his part well enough.

Lea Thompson was the wrong actress for Howards girlfriend. They needed someone like a Carmen Electra. Someone who was attractive but who suggests more of an attitude.

^^^ I agree with John on all these points. I also think the movie came out at the wrong time. By the time the film came out Howards popular streak in the seventies had long since come and gone. The film would have done better with a pre-1980 release...maybe done as a toon'. Edgier, adult themed cartoons were first around in the seventies....Done right, Howard might have been the best of them.

As it was, I couldnt get over the midget in the Donald Duck outfit.

I do remember one part that was sort of funny....and me and my friends were desperately looking for a laugh....
"...Aren't you going to do something?"
              "She took my eggs!"

After that, we got up and left the theater. Never saw the rest of the film till' it came out on video.

Tho I didn't love HTD, I was not in the hate camp either. I thought it was pretty outrageous at the time to try to do that as a movie. Even in my teen brain, I realized you couldn't really make a Howard the Duck film with anything short of an R rating. BUT; I did enjoy it and it still boggles my mind that Lucas backed it. My two biggest complaints would be with Bev and the boss monster at the end. It was my understanding that it was supposed to be a giant duck as the pure evil thingy we have to fight to get this movie over with. That would have been great. For Bev, she was too cute and not brassy enough. Needed to be more punky, I think, to go with the era.
A spiderman cameo would have been nice as well.

I really liked this movie when I was a kid. More for Lea Thompson than the duck suit. I can still remember the damn theme song. I'll probably buy the DVD. Memories...

                    >"She took my eggs!"

That line was a staple for the gang back in the day....

Y'know, I didn't like the movie; but I DID like the Dark Destroyer monster at the end.

The scene where panty clad Lea Thompson is crawling onto the bed was... inspiring.

Might pick up the DVD, I love many of the big budget misfires of the 70's and 80's

I think this is the only movie I saw in the theaters with my dad, he's not much of a movie fan, but that time I got him to take me to see go see it. I might get it just for the nostalgia
