Howard The Duck Dvd

Okay so this week we finally get Howard the Duck on dvd. Some people really love this film, other hate it. Some thought it was good, others thought it was a Suck fest. I can't say that is not one of those guilty pleasures for me. As bad as the film may be, as 7 or 8 year old this was masterpiece of the cinema. A Film I was holding right up there with other bad films of which are still guilty pleasures of mine to this day well. " D.C. Cab " , " No Holds Barred", " Cloak And Dagger", "The Wizard", and " Mr Boogedy". There is something to be said about enjoying and having to the ability to enjoy something you did as a child over and over and over again.

I have not picked this up yet, but to honest I plan on doing so, Along with Charles in Charge season 4 , and Mr Belvedere Seasons 1&2. Over the years I have managed to build a quite entensive dvd collection of classics, current hits , and guilty favorites from my childhood. It's nice to see some of those finally making their way to DVD. Now If I can only get that horrid Hulk Hogan film "NO HOLDS BARRED " and that absolute favorite of mine "MR BOOGEDY " I will be ready to relive my childhood to max with my son.

Whether you hated HTD or loved it , Tell us all what the think of this release ?

Having never seen it, I really can't comment. My first take is that it should have been much darker, perhaps a Tim Burton-styled film, to match the Gene Colan mood of the comic at it's best.

Instead, it was going for the 'hit-comedy-Ghostbusters-Back-to-the-Future-type' audience. NOTHING wrong with those movies (I love 'em), but just the wrong approach for Howard.

I hated Howard the Duck. I was about 16 years old when it came out and I don't think that I even watched it to the end. I know many people love this film and I just cant figure out why. I agree with david b, if it had a "darker" tone to it, I might have liked it better.

I was at Walmart yesterday,.. & didn't see it in the new release section ?
Might come out next Tues then,.. right ???
I might pick it up if I see it...., I think I was like 9 when I 1st saw it,.. or something... I just remember Lea Thompson,.. she was my 1st Crush.

I forget his name but Mr. Rooney from Ferris Bueller is the Bad guy in the movie right? As a kid I loved this movie !

According to Amazon release date was 3/10/09. I know the Walmarts near me are notorious for getting releases late. Not new movies , but older films new on dvd. I'd check again may this weekend. I actually had a crush on Lea Thompson back then too. She was like that older girl next door. LOL.

I do agree that a darker tone maybe exactly what that film needed. Back then though comic book films were not looked at to be dark. They really were not looked at as anything more than a cartoon with real people. Maybe the rumored remake will be darker.

Actually sort of . He was a good guy possessed by the evil overlord or something like that.

Thats cool because I never could find it on DVD.I was around six when it came out but was cool back then.Its a cult classic for me need to get soon.Thw chick was hot in that movie for sure and the duck in the bubble bath.

Wasn't Mr. Boogedy one of those 80s Wonderful World of Disney tv-movies? In fact, I think there was a sequel as well. I kind of remember watching it with my kids when they were little. The monster kept yelling "BOOGEDY!"

I'd love it if Disney released some of that stuff on video, including the Davy Crockett remakes with Johnny Cash and the Harry Anderson Absent-Minded Professor. Long time we'll have waiting for those, Disney can't even get it together on stuff like Song of the South and Zorro, no brainers for the Disney Treasures line, let alone '80s stuff they'd sooner forget. Thank God they can rerun Hannah Montana 87 times a day since they do seem to have run out of acceptable Disney material otherwise! God, I miss Vault Disney, even if it was on at 3:00 am.

Now that I think about it, I'd like to see Harry Anderson back on again somewhere, he was just seemed like such a great guy.

Oh, and by the way, I didn't HATE Howard the Duck, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again. Sexy Lea Thompson aside.
HTD the movie suffered from the same problem HTD the comic book had- Steve Gerber was the driving force behind the character, his actions, and his world. Once he left the book, the character fell apart. Same with the movie. Howard is one of those rare characters who only performed correctly under his original creator, no matter what other talent tried to handle it.

The Spirit by Will Eisner, Plastic Man by Jack Cole are others that come to mind. Everybody thinks they know how to do these characters, but they never seem to be successful by anyone else. There is just some magic the originators had, some understanding that nobody else gets. Gerber had that with Howard the Duck.

You are correct it was one of those wonderful world of disney TV films. Yes there was also a sequel . " The Bride Of Boogedy " I agree they rerun Suite Life, Hanna Montana , and all those other tweenie shows all day , but they have no time to re-air older classics. At least if they got this stuff on DVD they can do something with it. I am sure they will target older fans, but give today's generations a taste of these classic goodies. It's really nothing new for Disney. They are sitting on tons of properties and have either no clue what they have or what to do with it . They are finally moving their Money making ***'s and releasing some of the stuff , but nearly what they could.

Look at Spider-man & His Amazing Friends . It's good enough to air on Toon Disney ( Now Disney XD ) 3 times a day , but not good enough for DVD release. Disney has and does a lot of great stuff, but they just sit on things that they could utilize. Think about how many characters Disney has , and how many have ended up in the Character graveyard since oh the 70's and 80's . You just don't seem them utilizing their resources as well as they could.
