Football is boring

Hmmmm....
I'm not a sports guy, and I've always found football to be really dull. To wit:
-any time something happens the game STOPS! "We knocked Bob down, time for a break." I believe Carlin said it best: "If football is like 'war' don't stop the game 'cos someone fell down. Let the Red Cross pick them up!"
-and once things are ready to start, there's a zillion weird rules about who gets the ball. "Since it's the second Tuesday of the month, and the sun is at an 87 degree azimuth, posession goes to the team with the lighter unforms. Oh, wait; it's a leap year...." I thought Rugby had the best way of dealing with this sort of thing: everyone piles onto the ball and whoever crawls out with it gets to keep it. Seems fair, he worked for it.
-people talk about how much strategy there is, but I don't think "stand here and when the game starts get in THAT guy's way" is exactly the invasion of Normandy.
-I'm always being told how tough a sport it is, but Soccer players do way more running, and Rugby players hit just as hard WITHOUT the armour.

I'll let someone else chime in on Football but soccer is an extremely difficult sport to play at a high level. Unlike any other sport, there is no stoppage to the game except halftime with the exception of an injury. Any freekicks, cornerkicks, etc. are not really stoppages because the player can simply place the ball down and kick it as quickly as he/she would like. There are no timeouts so you can't stop the game and talk strategy. Players have to think on their toes and get creative with the ball. This is part of the game that the U.S. has not been teaching until recently and why they have never had an exceptional National Soccer Team even though I believe the talent is just as good as some of the top countries like Brazil, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, etc.
Only 3 substitutions are allowed per game. That means most of the players are running 90 minutes so they have unbelievable stamina.
The foot skills are incredible. People talk a lot about eye/hand coordination but eye/foot coordination is even more difficult. Most of the professional players can take a soccer ball and control it with such precision; it would make your jaw drop. I challenge anyone who has never picked up a soccer ball to see how many times you can juggle it using just your knees or feet. I would be impressed if anyone can do more than 10. There are kids in my daughter's soccer club that can do over 1000 and they are only 13 or 14 years old. A pro player could probably juggle for hours non stop.
Try shooting a soccer ball at a goal from 18 yards out. Don't just put into the net but be able to hit any part of the goal at will (top left corner, top right corner, lower left, lower right), be able to kick it with a bend (like a curve ball) or hit it with no spin. All pro players can do this easily.
It is one of very few sports that you have to start playing at a young age to have any chance of being a pro. I have never ever heard of a professional soccer player who started playing at 14 or 15 and was able to turn pro but I have heard of Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey Players who have been able to do it. It is just one of those sports that is very difficult but unless you haven't played is hard to appreciate."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

I think you really need to have played the game or watch it with a passion to have a true understanding of the strategy involved.

I don't think I've watched an entire Football game this year. I'm ususally a huge football fan, but this year I just can't get myself interested in the game.
Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?Comment

I enjoy soccer because it's fast-paced and the players' skills are evident on-screen.
Football, on the other hand, apart from the intrigue of the strategies involved, comes across like a bunch of dudes throwin' a ball around. Dull, dull, dull, and not for me at all!Comment

On the other hand I find soccer more of a track meet and boring. Still I love other sports like baseball, basketball, MMA/boxing, rugby and especially tennis but to me there's nothing else like football. To each thier own I guess.Comment

Well.... I think it's one of them personal taste things. You either dig it, or you don't. I find it slow, and I'm not much of a "joiner" so I don't get into the rooting for your team thing. But that's me.

Soccer gets kind of a bum rap here in N. America; but it's a damned difficult game. The RUNNING alone does me in. It's like all the running in Football, but without all the breaks. Rugby is more my speed though; it's like soccer with fewer rules and more aggression. Still too much running though....

I know how the game works (heck I coached a little league team here in town for 4 years)
But I just can't get interested in watching it on TV.
For me, it's much like auto-racing.
Unless you know someone out there doing it, it isn't any fun to watch.Comment
