My husband and I decided not to have kids, but if by some twist of fate, I ended up with a son, I would name him Holden. One of my favorite fictional characters is Holden Caulfield from "Catcher in the Rye." Also William Holden is one of my favorite actors.
I can see Mike's point about not sticking the kids with a terrible name, but I would not be against using geeky references as long as they're not too glaring. Heck, they're better than some of the names kids are getting nowadays! A friend of mine was pregnant and asked me to come up with unusual names, and I gave her a list that included Aayla, Ashla, Mara, Harley, Jaina, etc for girls. She really liked the name Jaina, regardless of where it came from. I had a more difficult time with the guy names though. One of my favorite combinations was Alan Scott though. Things like that wouldn't necessarily be noticed, even by some comic fans.
My husband's first name came from John Wayne's character in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," because it's his father's favorite movie. And my sister-in-law is named Mindy. Yes, they got it from "Mork and Mindy."
Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

    Check out my customs!

My dad named me after Christopher Lee (pop is a big movie fan, especially horror movies). Well, first name only, he wanted to go the whole nine yards and have my middle name be "Lee" but my mom drew the line at that. Too bad, that would have been cool.

I briefly flirted with naming my son after a character or actor I liked, but decided to just go with a name I really liked (went with "Alexander"). But he has a Japanese middle name, so that's cool. I'm not sure what route we are going to take with our upcoming daughter yet.

It seems like only this generation isn't happy with common names that have been used for hundreds or even thousands of years in the past.

Basically since the advent of TV, movies and media in general.

Makes me wonder if it's actually only a trend.

They all got very normal (and actually older not common for a couple) names in the end.

              Hmmmm....

A friend of mine maned his son Quentin; after one of his favourite RPG characters. Funny thing, his son is the exact OPPOSITE of the character.

My dad named me after Hector, prince of Troy, from Homer's Iliad.

My dad's brother named his son, Achilles, also from Homer's Iliad.

Both names are used for boys in the Spanish language for some odd reason.

Not named after a character, but my oldest daughter's middle name is Reese. We picked it because the main thing my wife craved when she was pregnant was Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (plus it flows well with Madeline, her 1st name).

My youngest daughter is Morgan Riley (nothing special, just sounds good). There is a Morgan in my family, but it is a man.

Or Mars. Wouldn't that be a cool name for a boy? The god of War!

To continue the tradition, how about Ajax, the warrior god from the same story?

I wanted to name our son Ziggy Stardust, but my wife said no way. It was going to either be Paul or David she said. We went back and forth and couldn't decide. Finally she left it up to me and I asked for a sign. We were walking through a flea market and I spotted a Rainfall David figure and it was settled. I bought the figure for a dollar and we named our son David. If we have another son, I'm gonna push for Bowie.

My wife agreed that if we ever have twins, a boy and a girl, we'll name them Luke and Leia. That rocks even if the odds are astronomical.

My brother named his son Owen Hawk. Owen is just because he liked the name, but Hawk was the name of one of the Fisher Price Adventure People. My brother carried that figure around with him wherever he went.

My father-in-law is a huge racing fan and actually named my wife, Jodi, after a famous racer of the time.

I would personally never name a child Apple or Mowgli or whatever abomination celebrities are coming up with. However, I see nothing wrong with naming a child after someone (fictional or not) who has made your life a positive experience. If I had a son, I always wanted to name him James after James Joyce, one of my favorite writers. Who's to say that Apple or Mowgli won't grow up to be a positive influence on others and grow in popularity. Names have to start somewhere.

My name, Shane, is an Irish family name but my Mom chose it before I was born. She liked it after seeing the Alan Ladd movie "Shane".

My oldest sons name is Lucas, chosen simply because his Mom and I liked the name, but I get a kick out of saying to him...(in James Earl Jones Voice) "Luke, I am your father!".

                                My sons names are

                                John Michael Elvis
                                Andrew Robert Presley

Being a Huge Elvis fan, I wanted them in there. But I decided to make it a second middle name so if they didn't want any one to know they would still have a middle name. Cool thing is they both like Elvis!
