Has anybody named one of their children after a fictional character or celebrity?

Okay I'll go first. When my wife was pregnant with our third and last child, I suggested the name Mara Jade. Who for you uninitiated, is a character from the Star Wars expanded universe. It wasn't to do with the character herself, I just liked the name. Has a nice ring to it. I do also happen to like the character. Anyway, much to my surprise, my wife loved it and we have our very own Mara Jade. Ironically she is a red head too.

Anyone else do something like this or am I just a supreme geek? I thought the name would not be recognizable by most people and those that did would love it.

I would never do that to a kid.

A name is something they're going to have to walk around with forever.

It shouldn't suit the parents current folly of loving a movie, soap opera or celebrity.

    Just my opinion

I named my son after Dean Martin and Clarke Kent. My daughter's middle name is Morgan after Morgan Le Faye. We toyed with other names but we didn't want to make the kids stand out.

Most of the names i hear my son talk about are things I've never heard before, a lot of celtic names.

I have a friend who named their daughter Taylor. Jokingly I said to dad - "after the planet of the apes?" he said not exactly - he was watching it when he got the inspiration for the name.

My sister was undecided between 3 or 4 names before her son was born. In the hospital they saw a rerun of the Love Boat and went with isaac (one of the 4 names). so though not named after the character - it was a significant part in the naming.

well as I said, I did not do it because of the character. I just liked the name. I would never give a name just based on my love of something....ie Luke or Lucas for Star Wars, which my wife had actually suggested for our son. Plus, with Mara, very few people have ever recognized the name when we give it....actually maybe only 1-2 people and she is almost 5.

I named my oldest Morgan, but not because of Morgan Le Faye, although I sometimes tease her that I did. We just liked the name, it has a celtic background and is also the German word for morning. I am of German descent as is my wife, so we chose that.

my nephew was named Troy, after Akeman, because his father was watching the game when they were trying to pick a name.

Toyed with the notion, but it seemed too obvious to those around me who know me to be a comic geek. So we went with family member's names, and variations on those.

Well---you know---Mara Jade works well---because even if it was a
geeky move----it IS a pretty name IMO--- and unique sounding to
                  the ungeeked ear.

My children's names are a little unusual...

Santford Lee (Santford was my grandfather's name, Lee is a family name on my ex's side of his family)...

Jasmine Netta Nicole (Jasmine from the flower, Netta was my grandmother's name, no idea where Nicole came from )

Damian Alyster (loose interpretation "defender of mans fate")

Lillyth Ann (loose interpretation "merciful night")
                          "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"

In the Southeast Pacific, lies the sunken city of R'Leyh. There lies C'thulhu waits to return to our world with the other Great Old Ones. A hideous creature of enormous size and alien power, it waits for it's time to return patiently. For it has all the time in the world while it waits for the stars.

My husband would have killed me if I named our first born Cornelius or Taylor. I didn't want a name of somebody we already knew or met...so we stayed with Dylan. It's short and sweet, and suits him just fine.

Well---going by that---a lot depends if you're gonna react
to a definition on the Internet--- or actually have a reaction
based on how the name sounds to ya
