Where I went to school, it was kind of a special case ...
Let me splain .......
I live in the sticks ...
It was so stickey -- my township didn't have a school...
They bussed us over to the next township (which had a large school and it used to handle all the local townships with no schools).
By 1973, my township final built a school and I switched over in 3rd grade.
The school was so new they didn't even serve hot lunches the first year because the kitchen was still being built
Anyway,
They filled the school will all young fresh out of college teachers.
Most of my teachers were barely 15 years older then me.
We used to have Speech in a book-mobile type bus that went to the 4 local elementary schools. It was kind of downer to be in speech, as many kids teased those that had to go. I never had to go, but was tested a lot. I did have a lisp as a kid and was apparently on the cusp of being put in the class, but didn't quite meet their criteria.
I'm happy to say now that the stigma of speech class is apparently gone from this area. My son qualified for pre-school due to speech issues. After three years in speech (two years of pre-school and one of kindergarten), it really helped him, and now in first grade he no longer has to go. He actually misses it though! He had some great teachers and they made the whole process fun for the kids.
