Anybody else here ever go to "speech class" ?

Do they even still have speech class in school anymore ?

Incase you don't know, here's how it works ...
In grammer school, a speech teacher calls everyone (one a time) to their office.
You sit there and read outloud a few sentences while they look at your mouth ...

They then decide if you need speech class.

    I did

    It was great.
One day a week for 1 hour I got out of class practicing how to talk

In the end, I don't think it helped --- I still talk a little like Joe Pesci meets Daffy Duck

It was speech therapy. My mom had a master's degree in it and worked as a Speech Pathologist in the public schools. She helped a lot of kids learn to stop stuttering or lisping.

I haven't thought about this in a long time. I had a mild lisp when I was very young and went to a weekly speech therapy class. It definitely helped. I don't lisp at all now, even after several beers : )

My youngest son is in speech therapy and my daughter was in it. For some reason, they roll their R's a little bit. It isn't bad but enough of an issue that we wanted some help.

We actually had to jump through a few hoops to get it for them. Basically, we were told that they couldn't have speech therapy unless it was hurting them academically.

I replied "Well, they feel embarassed to speak up in class....is that a good enough reason?"

That was all it took. My daughter's issue is almost gone and my son has improved dramatically.

yea, we needed to have a real speech doctor look at our daughter, in order for the school to let her take it...

Back in the 70's in my school, they seemed to be hurting so bad for speech students, they took many kids that didn't even sound like they had a speech problem to begin with.

Back in the day, (in my school anyway) they never called it speech therapy ... They called it speech class ... Even the teachers called it that.

All I remember was my speech teacher was about the prettiest looking teacher that ever lived.
She was very young and always dressed like a hippie (this was the early 70's)

my daughter has a little hearing lose in one ear..not bad..but just enough to be a small problem with her speech and not being able to pronounce certain sounds...main reason why she has to take the class...which she loves alot...so that's good..they make it fun for them to be there..she's only 6 too...

yup ... I had the speach class ... I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate so the whole roof of my mouth was opened for almost a year.

                    here's a pictrue of me ...

my uvula thing was in two halfs as you can see in the picture ... now the cool thing is ... just about a year ago I was talking with a lady who was a speach teacher ... and she had no clue I had been born with a cleft palate ... she said she can always tell if someone was born with one, due to the tone and basic sound of their voice ... I was the first that she couldn't tell
