Grew up in NJ and had the same experience, except it was always a male doc for the guys and a female (usually) nurse for the girls. We had to "turn and cough", get checked for scoliosis, measured for height and weight, and got eye and ear exams. In elementary school, we even had our height and weight recorded bi-annually on our report cards. That is how I discovered that I grew 7 inches in 4 months (September - January) in 4th grade.

Ok, being a girl that grew up in NYC, I never even heard of that. My issue was that I have benign blood tumors on my left arm and foot, and had an outsy belly button. (now it's a halfsie), and even though I had a clean bill of health from my pediatrician, the school kept insisting on making this an issue. The school called my mom in to school once a year to discuss the "problem". By the 3rd or 4th grade, Mom had enough. She very politely, but rather sternly, told them not to call her anymore, and if they had any questions, to call my pediatrician."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

Dr. Duk E. Lee did our physicals. We lined up and he told us to "Drop your pants and your shorts, then turn your head and cough" with a thick Chinese accent. It was very memorable. When I was older, he became my personal doctor. He was a heck of a nice guy, but he cracked us up in school.Comment

We had that as well, but only for a couple of years, then it was only for the sports physicals. Now you have to go to your own doctor and bring the confirmation note to the school. My buddy's little brother peed on the doctor during the test and couldn't stop. Funny as hell. Definately a $10,000.00 World's funniest winner if I had it on video. He was younger than us but awesome at sports so he was with us getting tested for the first time and when the doc squeezed em he went off like Old Faithful. Guess no one had ever grabbed his nads before. We were dying, doctor and nurse were screaming for him to stop, he was freaking out cuz he couldn't. He's turning left, he's turning right no where to go. The doctor is trying to cover it. Like 10 or 12 of us just standing in our underwear watching it happen. Oh I'm peeing just remembering it. What a great memory."Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

But our physicals were different then most of what yous are describing for one reason....
You guys clearly had the turn and cough hernia checks ... Like any sports physical.
The doc puts his finger UNDER your nuts and then you cough.
We, had our nuts felt, fumbled and played with.
No turn and cough
I suspect they were checking to see if anyone had any irregularities of the nuts themselves.Last edited by Mikey; Dec 3, '08, 12:00 PM.Comment

However that is also normal procedure for checking for Lumps, bumps, size difference between the two, detached testicle or possibly a wrapped teste where they wrap around each other and get all tangled up very serious happened to a buddy of mine.Or possibly even an undescended jewel.
Failing that I don't know what they were doing to ya but ya we had similar experience to that. They did however explain what they were doing.Stopped doing these around grade four or five none of my brothers or sisters went through this...Ah the good old seventies...
I also remember getting the lice check two or three times a year as well...How embarrassing is that...even got sent home once...
Everybody treats you like a leaper...Ah the good old seventies where they bring you in front of everybody for humiliation...Oh well at least they had MEGOs back then...LOL“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”Comment

Back then they checked everyone for prostate problems.... I know it was very uncomfortable when he told me to turn around and "spread 'em." It was even worse when I realized the dr. had both hands on my shoulders! (TRAUMA)

All of our physicals were conducted by our own doctors.
The only thing I remember were routine sight and hearing exams along with the scholiosis exam. Even those were done in private without a line of kids snickering as someone ran a finger along your back."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."
