    Just got my physical results

Since I thought I was having a stroke this summer I took it upon myself to get a full physical. Besides being fat (which I already knew) I guess I'm in ok shape.
I had a heart ultrasound which was normal, Blood pressure is 130/80 which for my age is ok. My bloodsugar was 84 which is good and my cholesterol was 168, a real surprise. I thought it would be high. I has my curroted (sp, the two on your neck) scanned and I'm happy to say they are plaque free! I'll tell you the scare I had this summer made me reevaluate a lot. I LOVED smoking cigars. Garagesale and Juan can vouch for me on that. At mego meet I smoked too damn many. Well I haven't had one since July. I also slowed way down on the fast food. Mickeydees or fast food only once every two weeks for me. Also no more regular soda. Boy I miss my regular Pepsi but seeing my Lizzy grow up a lot more important to me than any sugary drink. I'm writing this to encourage each and every one of you to get a check up. Many of you I consider good friends and believe it or not would miss a lot if you were gone. We are not young any more. Get a check-up for the sake of your wife and kids. I had a wake up I don't want any of you to live through so see the doctor. I was like many here and was scared to see a doctor for fear they would find something. My doctor told me that almost always if you feel ok when you get a check up and they find something it can be fixed of stopped. Well enough of my rant, Just remember I hope you all know I say these things because I truly care about our community and the people in it.

Excellent post and topic. I had my own scare this Summer with diabetes.

I was diagnosed in August with type2, which kind of made me chuckle being a Mego guy. You gotta find humor in some of this dreary stuff. Anyway, I completely eliminated sugar from my diet. No candy, cookies, soda nothing. I cut out white bread, pasts and rice as they metabolize into sugar in the bloodstream. Simply by doing that, I've dropped 55 pounds and have loads of energy now that my body is producing it's own.

I've still got another 40 or so to go, but I think the hardest part is behind me. I wholeheartedly concur with the teach. Get stuff checked out now. MOst people have no idea they are diabetic, and when they finally find out, it's too late to repair the damage done. Put machoism aside and see a physician. It saved my life.

        Your vital signs are great.

I too have normal glucose and blood pressure readings...but my cholesterol is slowly creeping up...it's now at 190.

I too have cut down on fast foods...but I still frequent them twice a week.

On the soda...I think the fizz is what you would miss the most...I recommend getting mineral water like Perrier and add just a tad of fruit juice...it tastes great.

I also love good quality macanudo cigars.

However...I do control myself and only have three cigars a year...one on my birthday, one on the Fourth of July, and the other on New Years' eve.

Glad to hear you're okay, John. You're right about getting checkups and also taming those urges and desires. It's damned hard.

I usually have a couple beers or a couple glasses of wine every night, and have done that for years. I just decided to stop for a while and see what that feels like. In just 5 days, my belly is shrinking and my mind is clearer and more active at night.

Our choices make such a difference, it's so easy to forget that.

                  Good for you!
It takes alot to just walk through that door but once you do then you see there is nothing to fear.A cough here,a finger there,a needle poke, bing, bang, boom you are out the door.
I get my physical done every year around the same time thanks to the wife and kids.
Excellent topic and I agree, now everybody should go to the doc.No excuses you are never to busy to take care of yourself.

Was this before or after the hurricane? Cause after the first one I went thru, I felt like I was going to keel over with a heart attack or stroke, too.

Good to hear your system is still working good John

my family has a history with heart issues ... and I right now at this point I'm about 100lbs overweight, I'm going to be 32 in just a few days ... but I have started (just this last week) of walking a half mile every other day and hope to start doing it every day in the next week or two. Greg (austex) has been helping by giving me pep talks I've already lost a couple pounds.

That's good news man! We're all getting to an age where we have to start being more careful. Glad to hear things are okay.

                            Great timing on the post.

I am usually really good about physicals but haven't had one in two years. I'm about 15 lbs away from my perfect weight and wanted to hit it before going in for the full physical.

A co-worker of mine (and who is younger than me) was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of weeks ago. His blood sugar level was 350!!!

My wife has prediabetes and takes oral dosages of glucophage to help keep under control. She occassionally takes her blood sugar and since both of my parents have diabetes, I allowed her to take mine to see if I need to have any immediate concerns in that department. It was 104 which I thought was too high but after doing some research on the internet and talking to my doctor that everything is ok...I had also chowed down on 4 huge sugar cookies the night before which is unusual for me and probably had an effect on the reading. I had took it again this morning and it was down to 93 whew.

I have an appointment this Tuesday with my doctor to get the full blood work done and arrange for a full physical. I just turned 40 so I don't know if they are going to recommend the dreaded prostate exam and my mom warned me that we have a family history of colon cancer and other colon related problems and should discuss whether or not it would be prudent to do the colonoscopy. I'll do whatever.

Thankfully, I have dropped 10 lbs since my last doctor visit and right where I need to be with my weight with just a few lbs to go.

I don't drink too often...maybe one night a week...and just a couple of glasses of wine. In my attempt to drop the few extra pounds I decided to cut that out too for now.

I honestly feel healthier than I have in about 10 or 15 years so now is a good time to see if my insides are doing as well as I feel on the outside.

                              .
If this is indeed true (family history) then by all means, have a colonoscopy. They aren't that bad (i've had three). Because of my family history I had one at age 37 and they found something. If I had waited until I was 50 (the age they recommend if you have no family history) I woulda most definitely had full blown colon cancer.....Colon cancer is actually highly preventable (and curable) if you are routinely screened.....
