I don't have strong feelings about the show one way or the other.

Chico, like all the other sitcoms of the time, just held no interest to me as a kid. I watched fantasy shows like Wonder Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, Man From Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, etc. and had zero interest in sitcoms.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

There you go. Sorry, 'detesting from my DNA' it was perhaps too strong a phrase. I just preferred other shows that entertained more. It's not that I'm too white-bread per se, but you have to put it into context with ALL the other shows on at that time. Inner-city stories were fine, just got over-loaded with them. I liked All in the Family and Sanford & Son. Someone mentioned MASH, not sure why...

Just take a look at some vintage TV Guides and you'll see what I mean. It was a well-documented clear network trend towards urban life, which is why they took most of the escapism shows off - Just read up on it.

Kinda like todays thing about all these reality shows.. or Westerns in the early 60s. Too much of something's not necessarily a good thing.

That was me that mentioned M*A*S*H, mainly because of your line of "those early '70s comedy/drama/cutting edge shows"... I suppose I should have put one of those ugly little smileys in there to say it was sarcasm...

But M*A*S*H really was one of the premier comedy/drama/cutting edge shows... Just happened to be set in war-torn Korea rather than an inner city neighborhood... Different situations of course, but it was just as much, if not more "comedy/drama" than say CHICO AND THE MAN...
