Never really watched it, and what I've seen on reruns I haven't missed much.

I never thought much about it other than remembering that Freddie blew his brains out. And was surprised to see he had a son follow his acting footsteps.

Always liked "The man". Thought he was pretty cool as the lucky bed-ridden gramps who got to visit the Chocolate Factory. Plus he did a great job in the Posiden Adventure opposite his wale of a wife Shelly Winters. There was another guy in that movie who played a priest. I always got the two confused. Until I saw them in the same movie.

You confused Grandpa Joe with Lex Luthor?

          That's amazing

Jack Albertson was the older gent. Alright guy ~ I liked/didn't like the show..

Sorry, it's those early '70s comedy/drama/"cutting edge" shows I thoroughly detested from the very core of my DNA. I HATE inner-city comedies that make you feel guilty to be middle-class, 'Good Times', 'Chico', etc..

Gone was the cool, hip escapism sitcoms of the '60s, in with the urbanized network fodder. It's like they lost all sense of style, especially in those early, societal 'hangover' years of the '70s. Couldn't watch POTA on TV because 'Sanford' and 'Chico' was on.. Oy.

I liked the show back in the day but I don't think it's aged well, nowadays it seems too safe and dated. Prinze was a talented guy but the show is pretty thinly veiled to be a showcase for his comedy routine.

His suicide was the first time I'd ever heard of such a thing as a kid, I still remember his face plastered all over the check out stand at the Miracle Mart.

I'll never turn the channel if I come across Sanford and Son or Good Times but I can't sit through a whole Chico and the Man now.

I barely remember watching it in reruns. I vaguely recall them replacing Chico with the boy. How did they explain Chico's death?

Well, speaking as a person who grew up in Washington Heights, (in Freddie's old neighborhood), just outside of Harlem, those shows were created to portray other walks of life besides white bread, middle class America. Far from a guilt trip, but true to the fact that more than one demographic can be represented on TV. Plenty of inner-city kids saw how the middle class lived, but it wasn't until those shows that middle-class folks saw how we lived.

SANFORD & SON rarely ever got dramatic or "cutting edge"... Not sure if you were counting that show as one of your "etcs." or not, but they were in Watts after all and it doesn't get much more inner city than that...

GOOD TIMES was a little "dramatic" at times, but it was still more comedic than dramatic...

If you really want to point your finger at a show that was "comedy/drama/cutting edge" look no further than ALL IN THE FAMILY... Maybe it's not quite as "inner city" as the housing project setting of GOOD TIMES, but AITF had everyone beat as far as preachiness and being "political" and "topical"... "Meathead" did more preaching and laid more guilt trips on an audience than GOOD TIMES and CHICO combined... If you feel guilty about being middle class, blame Meathead, not JJ...

Haven't seen it in years. But I remember watching it and liking it. Prinze was a huge star and as Brian said, hearing he took his life, was very disturbing as a kid.

I watched it in the same manner. I don't remember much of it. It was one of those shows the adults watched so I'd play Megos or whatever and watch. More to be in the room than anything else. I did like Sanford & Son though.

Charo is an annoyance and it REALLY sucks/jumps the shark when Prinze passed away and they gave the "Man" a new "Chico", some little kid, PLUS the annoying Della Reese. Bleech!
