Why don't they just move New Orleans ?

Watching all this news coverage on television has me wondering .....
New Orleans is below sea level (not a good thing to begin with) and I heard every year it actually sinks deeper.
It constantly gets devistated by hurricanes and sucks up a lot of disaster relief in many forms...
It almost makes me think, some day the government is going to say --- no more.
You're too bad of a risk.

So my question is, why don't they just slowly start moving the city to a different place ?
Perhaps somewhere where the ground is higher and a bit more inland.
Of course this can't happen over-night... But at least give it some serious thought.

Or how about a giant dome? A SUPER SUPER DOME? They can close it off and exist underwater for extended periods? They could change the name to New Atlantis?

Magnetic Hurricane-proof armor for everyone?

Better still: attach people with all those wiry things that hold action figures in their packaging? That'll never come loose, believe me!

Seriously, it's no laughing matter. Belgium faces the same fate. Holland, too, but they have it coming for being ***holes!

Problem is, with climate change getting worse, that New Orleans is just the first to go. Eventually, cities like NY will face the same thing.

In the end, moving to higher ground is just a quick fix.

Not to sound mean, uncaring or cruel ........
But, New Orleans is a ticking timebomb the goes off every few years.
You can almost set your clock by it like Old Faithful.

The problem I see, all the millions of dollars wasted in disaster relief to rebuild something that's going to be devistated again in a few years... and the process continues over and over and over.

While this repeated cycle is happening, somewhere else in the country there's poor kids who can't even get a decent meal ....... People with no health insurance that may die or living in agony ..... Old people living in squalor etc.

All this and more, but it seems more important to pour all this money into rebuilding New Orleans every few years.
Why ?
So they can do it again and again.

Why stay in a disaster area? Re-build, storm destroys, go blame someone, re-build storm destroys, go re-build- go blame. Same old crap every few years? Move the city already, may take years & years, but come on now.

Sad thing is, a lot of these people have no means to relocate. They'll just drop into another kind of poverty in some other place. And think of the families that were scattered across the US after the last hurricane. In interviews, it's clear that they don't have the money to travel to their loved ones and be reunited.

It's often not the natural disaster that is the killer, but the follow-up afterwards that is the true tragedy. But that would get me to the current administration and the way it handles things, so let's not go there....

what kills me to see people wanting the goverment to flip the bill for a NATURAL disaster (their home)hey don't get me wrong i feel for the people who lost everything but no one forced them to live below sea level or not carry insureance

They should relocate Kansas, the whole State. Tornado after tornado yet people still live there. And Arizona is really hot, people shouldn't live there either. California really does have way too many mud-slides and seismic activity to make it "safe" either, they should move somewhere more stable. And anyone living from Galveston to Panama City to Miami back up to the Outer Banks should get out soon. I think we should all just converge on Cleveland and build it up like Tokyo.

Well, the port of New Orleans is vitally important to the nation's economy---all that shipping going up the river--just look what this will do to gas prices. You pretty much need a city there, that's why it's always been there. It's a little different than vacation homes on the beach.

Well, the port of New Orleans is vitally important to the nation's economy---all that shipping going up the river--just look what this will do to gas prices. You pretty much need a city there, that's why it's always been there. It's a little different than vacation homes on the beach.

Let the whole thing sink and move the port to the new mouth of the mississippi. As was pointed out the ocean levels will continue to rise, The land level will continue to sink, and storms will continue to get worse through global warming. Better to be proactive then reactive.

So what are we doing to do with all the people? Drown them?
