Superman movie franchise gets a reboot. It's official.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
The logic is that ANYTHING with "JAWS" in the title would be considered
decent competition---as the original was the biggest movie of it's time.
Funny that you pick that one detail out of my whole "defense".
I thought I gave a pretty solid, thorough stance on why SUPERMAN III may have unnecessarily gotten the shaft by critics and audiences, and instead
of acknoweleding any of that at any length....the "JAWS 3-D as competition"
itty bitty mention gets brought up and challenged.
Geesh. So much for effort.

Yeah, I'll get my III DVD out from time to time and watch the
chemical plant scenes and the evil Supes/Clark fight. Those still hold up. I
love when he freezes the lake. Typical Silver Age Superman solution to a big
problem.
It's amazing that in such a goofy, fun movie that such a scene is done so
nicely. One of the best bits of acting Reeve ever does as Superman is when
he's tending to Olsen's broken leg. And it's cool how Supes uses his X-ray
vision to "play doctor".
Agree on Lester vs. Donner. You nailed it. Lester doesn't seem to
understand that while there can be humor, it shouldn't be so broad and
constant. His climatic battle between Supes and the Phantom Zoners in II
(which was all him directing) suffers from this. You get pulled out of the
direness of the situation by guys getting blown over in phone booths, etc.
To me, there's no point in debating Donner vs. Lester---they are like
apples and oranges. I really like BOTH of their approaches---unfortunately,
the blowhard Salkinds mixed and mashed them in SUPERMAN II resulting
in a VERY uneven movie....whilew III on the other hand, was quite together
in tone/style/plot/character interaction.
Lucky for us Donner's firm foundation resulted in II being much better than
it SHOULD have been.

Poor Hue Quixote, still tilting at windmills twelve pages into this thread....
George
Don't pity me----pity yourself for caring.

I don't know what's in that "red X" box ^^^^ George---
but, suffice it to say, if you're looking to provoke me
by chiming in about how "useless" my insights are---
I'll continue to play your game and acknowledge that.
That's what you'd like isn't it?
Can't think of any other reeason you feel the need to do this.

Well---if it improves our relationship any---I clicked on the link
and saw the pic---and had a laugh---
I also have to admit that I had forgotten exactly what
"tilting at windmills" was----so I went to wikipedia and looked
it up---I'm into learning all those literary things---so, I guess
I have to thank you for a little (re)education tonight.
(Still tees me off when you find issue with my thorough debating
though!)
