Don't get me wrong...I think Christopher Reeve is by far the BEST Superman...and I consider Supes 1 & 2 the very best comic-book-based movies ever...Mike knows this...
But come on, let's be realistic here...Supes 3 & 4 were awful...just plain awful.sigpicComment

One of these days I'll start a thread about SUPERMAN III to amp the debate
again (or maybe this one'll do JUST fine!)
but I think SUPERMAN III may be the "best" overall of the original four.
(Although the PZ villains may continue to make me take II over III)
SUPERMAN: THE MOTION PICTURE gets a bit a bit too ploddy and
dues es machina--ey for me to beat out III.
SUPERMAN II has many killer moments but most of them are
because the whole main cast are great at what they do---otherwise the
production is a REAL mess.....specifically the mishmash awkward tonal
changes caused by two director's footages being edited by people
not up to the challenge.
There's not much good to say about SUPERMAN IV---I think it's pretty
much "horrid and worthless"----but that scene between "Sick Clark" and Lois
makes me choke up everytime I watch it----so I'll give it that.
SUPERMAN III is a total slapstick goofball movie and it WORKS fine if
you view it that way, sans expectations---it flows wonderfully and the cast was wonderfully picked for the job.
On top of that the scenes with Lana were real sweet (not in
an awkward "Lucas way" at all)
PLUS it has the Superman vs. Clark scene that I like----but think that too
many comicbook fans that think that is the only good part of the picture
are MISSING THE POINT of the whole tone of the movie.
ALSO most notably, SUPERMAN III actually has a plot twist at the end
to beat the villains that is actually CREATIVE compared to SUPERMAN: TMP
and, of course, 4.
Like someone said before "Superman III may not be the best SUPERMAN-type
movie---but as far as a decent Pryor 80s slapstick comedy in the guise of a
Superman film it does real well"Last edited by huedell; Aug 25, '08, 4:23 AM."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. Man, Supes 3 SUCKED. never saw 4 but I bet it was a stinkburger, too.You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

How does every Superman movie thread degenerate into "The Values of Superman III and IV: Why They Don't Suck" or "THEY SUCK!!!"?
My quick take; Superman III: A fairly well-made film with some very good segments, but overall a bad direction to go in (gee, sounds a lot like Returns!), but ultimately, unsatisfying as Superman movie.
Superman IV: Good idea, horrible execution. The rug was pulled out from under EVERYONE shortly before filming began. Budget cut in half, etc. Still, only watchable for Reeve. My kid likes it though because Superman fights someone.

OK, 3 sucked due to the non descript villains, including the pre helsinki Formula Robert Vaughn, and Richard Pryor shoehorned in for comic relief. Even as a youngster I despised that movie. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment
