      >Is anyone advocating that kind of moronic completionist ethic?

Nobody does CONSCIOUSLY, but I've seen it expressed in other ways. The "but it might get good" thing is one. Inertia is another; wherein someone keeps buying the book for no reason other than having done so for the last 15 years.

Even if it DOES get good, you can start picking it up again and get all the back issues you missed. Or the trade paperback versions. And with all the comic buzz internet sites you don't have to actually read the book to know how it's going. Hell; you pretty much don't have to actually read the books at all any more....

This is vaguely off topic, but when exactly did "reboot" become an accepted pop culture term for a fictional re-imagining? I only ask because I have started to hear it a lot recently (regarding the Bale Batman, the new Trek film etc)
It seems inappropriate. When I reboot my computer, rarely if ever, is a new universe or origin story inside of it afterword. It is even nearly always the same operating system (except for that one time in the late 90's when I was trying to run beoS, linux and windows on the same box and my bootloader went rogue)
In fact a reboot is usually a fix for minor glitches or new hardware/software installs. Its a good thing most of the time.

I am submitting this , a more appropriate term, for your consideration: "catastrophic drive failure". It seems more apt in most cases.
If you've ever had one you know... Lost data you treasured and can't bring back. Tons of work setting up. Having your favorite box be a bit funky and unloveable afterwords. Not realizing some crucial element is gone until months later when you do a file search and realize that it was on the OLD drive. Spending money you REALLY wish you didn't have to, just to see if the problems have been fixed...
For example, the title of this thread:
"Another DC catastrophic drive failure!! Getting old!!!"

          Feels good, eh?

I My self...am not a completest. I will cancel Books anytime I feeling They're not up to Par. Certain Books that include My Favorite Character(or Characters)...I can be Doggedly Loyal to, as I want to keep up with the Story(Batman).

                I''ve only ever cancelled X-Men Once(during Morrison & Quitely's run).

I have cancelled Batman a few times...when the Art was really bad.

                    Completists Anonymous

Hi, my name's Dave, and I have been at one time or another a completist.

I jumped on the Catwoman bandwagon a little late and just a few issues ago dropped it because it really sucked.

I am slowly going back to the days when the only books I read were Ultimate Spider-Man and The Batman Adventures. It won't be too much longer now that I got the final issue of Justice League Unlimited. I think I will stick with Green Lantern. I actually like what he's been doing with the Secret Origin storyline. Go figure. The Brave and the Bold is on the bubble. The Green Arrow / Deadman team-up was interesting enough to make me wonder how Nighwing and Hawkman will work next issue. Then, Mark Waid is done and somebody new takes over. We'll see.

I'm test-driving or auditing Trinity. I'll give it a couple more issues before I bail. I may bail around #9. From what I've seen, if it doesn't pull together around then, I'm out. I'm giving Busiek and Bagley the benefit from what they've done before. We'll see if they can live up to their reputation...

Is that coffee and donuts over there on the table? Confessing my addiction makes me hungry...

I guess I won't go off as another moronic completionist. You ever think that I am just passionate about comic books? I have been into these characters since I was a little kid. I guess I feel they are good characters and some of these modern writers are destroying them. I don't think it is fair to take such a great bunch of characters and twist them up so bad that they have to be "rebooted" as they put it to clean them up again.

I will keep reading these books because they are my only connection to some of these favs of mine. Maybe my moronic completionistic thoughts were a little abrasive to some people but I feel I stand strong against how a character is portrayed or being used.

I recently purchased some back issues of top DC and Marvel comicbooks in Adobe Acrobat form. Something tells me that I might have more fun and enjoy these back issues then try to understand how or why my favs are being basturdized and misused.

Enough babbling from me. I guess I ***** too much in here. I will shut my mouth and keep to myself I guess.

Y'know.... you're absolutely RIGHT; but you gotta remember that yes, these modern writers are doing some stupid, stupid stuff. That's not gonna change. So it's okay to NOT read the new stuff. If all it does is make you mad; let go. And if it gets good later on, pick it up again. And if you decide you want back issues they're ALWAYS gonna be available. (Unless the internet dies.)

                        >I feel I stand strong against how a character is portrayed or being used.

....and I certainly don't blame you; but ultimately these characters belong to big conglomerates who are gonna do what THEY want with them.

                        >Something tells me that I might have more fun and enjoy these back issues then try to understand how or why my favs are being basturdized and misused.

HAW! No doubt! But that's okay. It's primarily about entertainment. And the best thing is, nowadays it's SO DAMNED EASY to snag stuff you want! THAT'S why I can't understand people who complain about a book and STILL buy it. Don't waste your time, there's so much out there....

I've had this discussion a few times on other sites and one example STILL blows my mind. A guy was complaining about how terrible, shallow and icky current Marvel and DC books are. He listed all their flaws, and what he really wanted from a comic. THEN he mentioned buying an issue of Shonen Jump, and it had EVERYTHING he was looking for. He seemed to enjoy the stories and was generally impressed.

So of course he never bought another one, and continues to complain about the latest "Crisis on Infinite Secret Zero Massacre Wars." So you're nowhere's near the worst case here.

                        >I will shut my mouth and keep to myself I guess

SURE you will.... just like the rest of us....

I had the completist mentality for years, esp. with Batman. A few years back, after all the "Murderer/Fugitive" storyline and the continual emphasis on Batman being an insane jerk, I dropped all the Batman titles, after buying Batman and Tec for 25 years.. I picked them back up with "One Year Later" and enjoyed them for a while.

But here lately I found myself wincing at almost every new comic I read. This and the state of the economy led me to finally cancel my subscription service. Why blow $60 a month on something I don't even enjoy? This is supposed to be entertainment. I was no longer entertained. I quit new comics cold turkey.

This past weekend, I did go into a comic shop and pick up a few books to wrap up storylines I'd left hanging. But I don't see myself buying more than the ocassional new comic. I'll stick to TPBs and back issues for now.

And I feel MUCH better about it now.

Good choice. DDs been good for a long time now. However, I sure wish he could catch a break every now and then.

Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corp have been good for awhile too. Johns has done a good job building towards this "darkest night / war of light" concept.

Captain America has been real good. Of coarse, this means that one has to get past Steve Rogers death and Bucky/Winter Soldier running around in a shiney cap outfit. If you can, you'll enjoy it.

I've enjoyed both Astonishing X-Men & Immortal Iron Fist, but with new creative teams coming on it's a good time to jump off.

Trinity reads like old school bronze age Marvel to me. That's keeping my interest for now, but a weekly book just punishes my wallet. I can easily see myself dropping the title.

Dynamite's Zorro is very entertaining. BTW, if you all like the illustration in Zorro go find back issues of The Black Coat. Same illustrator the story was printed B&W. Reminds me of Gene Colan.

Unlike most of you, I'm digging Final Crisis. I admit though that I'm a HUGE Grant Morrison fan. His Doom Patrol and Animal Man brought me back to comics after a 5 or 6 year absence.
