I agree, Chris. This movie could've gone so wrong, or just be mediocre like Thor The Dark World for example.

You know, while marinating on this awhile, I really felt like Marvel was applying the Iron Man Template to this film.
Steven Strange was VERY much like Tony Stark in many ways.

Genius, best at what he does.
Financially well off.
Snarky sense of humor. Dry wit and huge ego.
Can't quite commit with his lady friend.
Receives grievous, life changing injury.
Becomes superhero to heal his physical problems, while lifting his spiritual and moral compass as well.
It's not a bad thing to use a formula that works, because it clearly does. I just couldn't help notice the similarities.

Those are good points, though I must admit I like Dr. Strange in comics and film much more than Iron Man in comparison.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

The Tony Stark (and Batman Begins) parallels are touched on a bit in the RLM Half in the Bag guys review:

The flawed hero bit is a trademark of the Stan Lee era at Marvel so its no surprise that some of these traits repeat.

The movie Tony Stark added the snark and the ego to the original origin story. Stan (or his brother Larry Lieber) were happy enough to just have Tony's heart condition be his flaw. For Strange, it was his hubris.

So the similarities really lie at the feet of the Iron Man franchise.

For both Stark and Strange I always got a bit of an arrogance vibe in the origin stories before they were both kicked in the butt by fate. The movie Stark just amped it up to the stratosphere.

Strange was arrogant in his first origin story.
