By far my favorite Marvel movie.

It's all subjective, but Strange has easily the best dialogue for any superhero movie so far. The Nolan films have some great exchanges, but they're usually capped by absurd philosophical notions that nobody would ever say aloud. But with a premise like Strange, existential talk is the core matter.

What Cumberbatch showed me was how much everyone else in the MCU is phoning it in because Whedon and the Russos are Broadcast TV directors. That requires a different mentality focused on hitting spots and quick coverage. But when the actors work with film directors - Favreau, Branagh, Johnston - you get character depth. The mid-credit stinger, for as blase as it is, was the perfect example. Hemsworth takes no lines seriously, as he personally sees it all as a gag. Doing that opposite Cumberbatch whose trying to channel a character...

As for the comedic exchanges, you see how subtlety has been ruined by Disney's infatuation with Depp/Sparrow. Cumberbatch makes it work because he's real heavy in the serious moments. Cumberbatch tied it back to how Strange's intellect was his shield and she shattered it. Since he was already without his hands, his weapon, he was defensless. RDJ in the Ancient One meeting would have played it like he was coming off a bad trip.

What I like about Strange's depiction the most is he wasn't "the chosen one", he had a choice and to be a better/more enlightened person, he literally had to sacrifice everything. Even Stark ended up being retconned into Chosen One nonsense with the IM2.

The motivations for Mordo and Mads I found very credible. And Mads was amazing in how subdued he was. I was afraid he was going to be chewing the scenery like Spader. For a sequel, They can easily have Mordo summon Kaecilius-as-Dormammu in the flesh. The eye makeup appeared to imply that.

I was really shocked by the 70's vibe they tried to inject. IIRC, all the song callbacks were from '76-'78, which is also when the Strange TV movie premiered...and damn if there weren't some probably accidental nods to that.

What Strange confirmed for me is Avengers 4 is Secret Wars. Fiege and Russos won't say so, but this laid the groundwork.

Agree with you about Cumberbatch, but not about Hemsworth. He takes Thor very seriously. Go back and rewatch the first film. His exchange with his father as he is being cast out of Asgard, and his subsequent humbling are some of the best dramatic acting in the entire MCU.

I forgot to mention I think Strange's costume was the best realized yet in the MCU...loved the addition of the yellow gloves at the end.

The Family and I enjoyed it, though I do have a Pet Peeve that was revealed in the Movie.

Other then that, it's another Winner for Marvel...Story, Acting, and Respect for the 'Material' are the Key.

Anyone read the book that is mentioned in the interview? Is it worth finding?

My wife and I saw it this afternoon and quite enjoyed it. Strange has been my favorite Marvel character going on 2 decades now and I had no complaints about this version.

I totally agree with that. To me, the difference is Hemsworth was working with Branagh a legit theater/film director, and not TV guys. Branagh was released from his Marvel contract because he didn't agree with their top-down control. At some point during Thor's production the cast were talking about going more Shakespeare with the sequel. Fiege/Whedon released him in Thor2 development because he was going his own way.

Another factor I see is how easily Hemsworth is willing to throw the costume on and lampoon as Thor. Evans won't and I recall RDJ has done some stuff, but like Depp/Sparrow the normal persona is infused into the character. I keep hearing about the humor in Thor 3 and I cringe.

My son and I saw it today and really enjoyed it. The lead in was good bringing us into the origin story, and the rest didn't seem too rushed, which is a pet peeve of mine.

I have that on my read list. It's not hard to find.

I've felt you could take Ditko Teen Parker and see that character evolve into Stephen Strange. The way Ditko Parker was willing to cut ties with people and choose work over personal happiness would lead someone to become very isolated like Ditko Strange was depicted.

The way Peter walks away from Betty stunned me when I read the Marvel Tales reprints as a kid. Cumberbatch tapped that same sentiment. They actually closed the chapter for Rachel McAdams character in one film. I can't think of another superhero film to do that.

I thought Doctor Strange was excellent, definitely in my top 5 Marvel movies.

Ya'Know...the thought crossed my mind during the whole movie to be on the alert, but I missed it...so...I'm gonna have to go back and see it again, but this time in 3D.

It will be like your almost there

Great movie! I expected to enjoy it, but I had a better time than expected. The whole family had a great time, and the 3D was worth it!
