Jason Momoa makes a better Namor than Aquaman.

I'm kind of surprised Alex Ross would paint an image of a beheaded Namor. Seems to violate his "keep it like the 70s" mantra.

Oh yes. It seems the films are taking their cue from Peter David's Aquaman...who was MUCH more Namorish than ever before or since.

it appears to me that Ross is chosen books with creators he's got an affinity with. Waid (his Kingdom Come collaborator) on Avengers, and Slott's Spider-man (dude brought back The Spider-Mobile!) are the other ones. Ross has often expressed his admiration for James Robinson's Golden Age, Starman and JSA. Robinson seems to be mining very similar ground to Ross' Kingdom Come in Squadron Supreme.

I don't think Ross is averse to horrific imagery necessarily, he just wants to keep the core of the characters intact. In this case, Namor's anti-hero status in recent years actually hasn't been too far off his depiction from the Golden Age, Silver Age and seventies. The stakes got ratcheted so high just prior to Secret War, Namor was the one who made the entirely emotional choice of saving the 616 universe by sacrificing (and committing genocide on an enormous scale) other dimensions. This hard choice put him at odds with his fellow Illuminati and had him fall down a slippery slope of best intentions when he fell in with Thanos and The Cabal. Very compelling stuff.

Also, this multi-dimensional survivor incarnation of the Squadron Supreme does mine similar enough ground to the 80's Squadron Supreme maxi-series. They are mostly victims of Namor's actions by his choice to save his own (616) universe at the cost of their universes.

Storywise, i'd also say it isn't necessarily entirely shock-driven either. From a character POV, James Robinson is drawing a distinct overt parallel between the Squadron's taking revenge/reprisal on Namor for his ends-justify-the-means behaviour in the events leading up to Secret War, to their own ends-justify-the-means behaviour.

I actually thought that the writer of New Avengers and Secret War kind of pulled his punch because he didn't fully follow through on the promise of Black Panther telling Namor he would kill him after escalating their conflict past the point of no return. Although Panther and mostly Black Bolt did do their best to kill Namor at the time. This was years of build-up without any kind of satisfactory resolution of that conflict.

of course we all know Namor will be back eventually.

They need to start him off as the villain and then gradually turn him into an anti-hero.

he could be the new loki.

The studio might want one of its first superheroes to join its Cinematic Universe — but will audiences want to see Namor on the big screen?

However, the situation might not be so clear cut; sources at Marvel told The Hollywood Reporter that the rights situation surrounding the character has not actually changed, with movie rights remaining outside the studio's control for now.
Development rights have been splintered three times: 70's, 80's and 90's. each time Marvel changed ownership, the new owners would sign new deals. Namor was signed away in the late 90's by Arad. Marvel has development rights back, but not distribution, so it's similar to Hulk. That means if they develop a Hulk-centric property, Universal can claim a percentage. Marvel gets around this by using Hulk as a sub-plot, such as how elements of Planet Hulk are in Thor3, but are not the focus of the main plot. Marvel's acts coy, because they can make a Namor film whenever, they simply don't want to give Universal a percentage of the box office.

This is what I meant by Inhumans. The studios have not been screwing Marvel over; that's a Marvel fairy tale to win public opinion sympathy, so if a studio did move forward, the outcry would start. I think they want to tie him into Inhumans, but that's a Fox mess Marvel won't admit to. The core Inhumans were apart of the FF animated world since '78. Those rights were acquired by Fox. Marvel has never held Inhumans as a separate license until 2011. They can't decide now what does or does not fall under purview.

My guess is Marvel's hoping to do a FF-centric wave with Inhumans, Surfer, Namor spinning out. What's that, 2020 at best possible?

I could totally see him in that role, he's already played Zeus. Excellent choice.
