Oh without question DaFoe was a PERFECT Norman Osborne. But every time I see the makeup test for the original concept of the Goblin (and think of DeFoe in it) I feel there was a missed opportunity. Could you have imagined his face in that? Omigod. Beyond creepy.

Unfortunately, DeFoe himself was the problem, for the word is that he wanted little to no makeup...such are the attitudes of these method actors, ego and vanity go hand and hand.
That Goblin friggin rules...had I been in charge, would've fired DeFoe on the spot...and hired an actor willing to don that.sigpicComment

^Yeah, it's criminal they didn't go with THAT. It was perfect! I can't understand why any actor would want to be below something he couldn't emote through at ALL.
My daughter and I watched the first Spider-Man movie a few weeks back. I was ready to be more charitable to the Goblin design, chalking up some of my dislike to just fanboy slavishness. Nope, it's that bad. DaFoe gives a fantastic performance, half of which is hidden behind an immovable chunk of metal/plastic.

Dafoe's sequence where he's talking to himself in the mirror was chilling! In that moment, he captured the essence of the Goblin's madness perfectly! I would easily put that right up there with Heath Ledger's Joker. And it is a shame a lot of the more nuanced aspects of his performance were stuck behind a static mask.^Yeah, it's criminal they didn't go with THAT. It was perfect! Chrissigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.Comment
