Does anybody else think Superman died with Christopher Reeve ?

I think Dean Caine was decent but he was just a pretender.

The Smallville stuff was - meh - Superboy stuff (see Sat morning stuff)

Anybody else think OUR Superman really died with Christopher Reeve ?

yeah, Chris Reeve was and always will be Superman to our generation. on that same note, I think no Superman movie should be made without the music from Superman the movie

Fraid so, yes. No one seems to have the charm and warmth. It's not just the twinkle in his eye, it's Reeve's voice, it's everything. I won't say never, but given audience cravings for badass superheroes, it's unlikely we will ever again see a Superman so sincere and friendly. The Superman who would save a kitten from a tree and be a friend to any boy or girl who needed him. That to me, made him far more Super than just a guy who could level a city.

That really sums it up for me too. Today's generation wants a Superman I can not relate with. But that's okay. Christopher Reeves is the Superman of my generation. I didn't want to share him anyway.

Well said Andy. I think the closest we have to that kind of hero now is Chris Evans as Captain America. He has the same sincerity and warmth. Maybe it's because Cap is just as much an orphan of time as Superman is an orphan of Krypton. It humanizes them, yet both remain positive.

No one even comes close to Christopher Reeve and it doesn't look like anyone ever will.

No, I actually enjoyed Dean Cain for what it was at the time: a source to get a weekly live action Superman show. Sure he wasn't near the same league as Christopher Reeve but I see all the different movies and tv series as part of the different earths that DC has.

Now the Superboy shows were a little different because I missed watching most of them.

I respect everyone's opinion on the character, and I thoroughly enjoy and respect Christopher Reeve's performance as Superman. He seemed so natural in the part. When someone makes any work or a creation look natural or easy, it's usually because of the extreme amount of work, thought and talent they brought to the project. That being said, no, the character absolutely did not die with Reeve. There was Superman before Reeve and there is Superman after Reeve. Just the fact that a thread like this exists is proof that Superman is alive in our hearts and minds.

Sure the Superman we see in comics and other media is different than the character was in our childhoods, but honestly when we read the comics or watch the films and TV shows, we all take something a bit different from the experience like reading or watching any other character. While it may be slight differences, we all experience the character from our own points of view. Superman means more to some of us than to others and some have a more narrow or a more broad view of the character.

The idea of Superman has slowly evolved since the character's inception, much like other mythological and fictional characters who have endured for long periods of time.. The popularity of the character waxes and wanes, but Superman has been a constant for more than 75 years. Superman truly is part of the fabric of our culture. The character has never been as popular — or maybe hot is a better word — as it was in the late 30s and early 40s, but Superman is still recognized worldwide, and I don't think that's going to change in the foreseeable future.

^You're right about everything you said. My boss, who is 72, despises Christopher Reeve and refers to him a sissy-man. He insists Superman died with George Reeves and Kirk Alyn.

Christopher Reeve is MY Superman. To me, he's the best, but I also really like George, and there are things I appreciate in every other actor before and since.

But, I tend to look at this as Reeve did: He was the custodian of the character for a short amount of time. While I doubt there will be another Superman who will resonate with me, like he did, there will be others, and they may have similar impact on another generation.

I was at an elementary school program last night, and right in front of me was a happy 2 year old in a Superman T-Shirt.

                            Superman ain't dead.

Reeve will always be the PERFECT Superman for me. when I think of Superman I think of Chris.

That said, like the comics themselves...Superman must live on forever, therefore the character must periodically be re-cast. I liked Tom welling(who really just played young Clark Kent), Brandon Routh was a good Superman and really reminded me of Chris(the weak script wasn't his fault). And Cavill is the generation's Superman and looks and plays the part well. I very pleased they got him.
