What made the Spider-man comic popular was the characterization Lee and Ditko infused into the series. Not just with Parker., but with the supporting characters and villains. Spider-man's look and powers are very nice but it's the character work that set the series and character apart.

The germ of the original idea isn't nearly as important as how Ditko and Lee advanced it.

So this wasn't the same show as ran on History Channel or PBS or someplace a year or two ago about the history of comics/Marvel? I tuned in toward the beginning and it looked/felt very familiar..

No, but it likely covered some of the same ground. The PBS program was comics in general. This show was all Marvel.

Didn't Simon and Kirby rework their "Silver Spider" concept into Archie's "The Fly"? And wasn't that the basic direction Stan and Jack were going to go in with Spider-Man before Stan switched gears and gave it to Ditko?

Yes, The Silver Spider was reworked into the Fly....I guess when Stan was looking to create "his last character that he wanted to do before he quit" Kirby mentioned The Silver Spider. Nothing except the teenager and Aunt and Uncle was used....as we all know how the story goes Kirby did about five pages and Stan rejected it. Gave it to Ditko and the rest is history. As Iconic as the Kirby cover is, I always dug Ditko's Amazing Fantasy cover. Kirby's Spiderman looked like the typical monster alien of the time....if you look at that Kirby cover and pretend you know nothing about Spidey, It looks like a giant alien spider creature with an alien, I guess that's why it was chosen over Ditko's cover.

            Steve.

I didn't know about this show, but I just found it through "other means" so I'll watch it tonight!

Me too, my peak time of reading monthly Marvel comics was during Shooter's reign.
