It's great, Howard was for a long time a symbol of Marvel's complete inability to make a good movie out of their characters. 25 years later and the biggest movie of the summer is based on a Marvel comic almost nobody reads.

I'm not sure a great Howard movie is possible. Howard was very much a part of his era and time, a satire and commentary on politics and the social era of the 70s. Look at how he failed soon after Gerber left the character. Too many people try to make him a funny animal joke character.
He is NOT a cranky smart alec, nor a snarky comedian. He isn't a superhero. His villains are... Odd.
He worked best as a satirical parody, with a wry humor. I'm not sure he would play well in our current overly pc era.
Yeah, that sounds pretty spot on. The first movie sure wasn't able to figure that out. It would be possible in the right hands no doubt, but it would probably have to be a great departure from the template Marvel has already set.
Honestly though, I didn't think a Capt. America would work in the current pc era, but they pulled that off.
My question is.... did anyone else spot the skeleton of Beta Ray Bill amongst The Collector's other displays?
As to the Topic at hand, the joke I took away (while watching the movie for the first time this afternoon) was that what may arguably be the very best Marvel Universe movie ever made has within it a deliberate nod to the undeniably worst Marvel Universe movie ever made.
But, to be clear, James Gunn has stated that this was only a joke.
Don't worry: ONE "Howard the Duck" movie is already one more than we will ever need and, thankfully, will ever have to endure. We can all sleep soundly now.
Howard is best on small doses. Perhaps a sweeps related appearance on Agents of SHIELD is next. Then maybe 5 to 10min shorts having him slightly skim the edge of the Marvel Universe showing the connections between the films. Maybe we see him in the backdrop of the films, like we see him pulled from his world during the first Thor destruction of the bridge... he's running around on Earth during the Avengers, and gets swept up by the collector at that point. Stuff like that.
