Interesting excerpts from a Hollywood Reporter article:

Sources say that Affleck has been signed for multiple movies, should sequels continue to proliferate. The talks were so secretive that many Warners execs and most WME agents remained unaware of their existence.
The deal also potentially lines Affleck up to star in (and direct?) Warner Bros.' answer to The Avengers: The eventual Justice League movie.
the studio approached other actors as well, including Josh Brolin. Ryan Gosling was also a possibility

Just saw this, can't see it doing anything, but it is causing quite a stir. 78,000 already. http://www.change.org/petitions/warn...share_petition

^^^ While I think the choice is odd, I don't believe people should be wasting their time signing petitions. This only creates free press for the studio. Plus it's a Superman movie he's starring in, so I doubt he'll have equal screen time with Cavill. I view the guest appearance as a test run for another franchise. If consensus runs negative on Affleck after the film has come out, then the studio can just slide another actor in without having to endure the PR nightmare of rebooting the franchise.

Josh Brolin on the subject of Affleck's casting:

"I've never seen such a global reaction in my life, I feel for him, truly. I would not want to be him right now. The reaction becomes so personal. It's like, 'F*ck this guy, I wish he was dead.' And you're like, 'What? Dude, seriously? This guy is just working like you are. He's doing the same thing you are. He's trying to make the best choices he can... I want him to kick *** and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words."
          And from Hugh Jackman:

"I have a great trainer for Ben," Jackman said.
