I still enjoyed my time in the theater with Iron Man 3, but the more I think the about it, the more I have a problem with the movie itself.

I think it's success is based purely on it being a sequel to the Avengers in most people's eyes, it coming out after a drought of mostly REALLY bad and unappealing movies, and the goodwill RDJ has built for himself and the role.

I think if it came out this week, it would be lucky to make a third of that take overall.

Marvel has been smart to stake a claim on the first weekend in May. Everyone is revved up for a big movie, the competition isn't quite as stiff and it might even get some slight benefit of opening near free comic book day.

Momentum from the Avengers and the likability and talent of RDJ carried IM3 most likely to the top of the BO charts for this year. It wasn't great, but it was good enough.

I think Marvel is smart to hold off on another sequel for a while and Use RDJ/Iron-Man in the Avengers sequels because it was pretty clear they were running a bit short on story material for the character.

As great as the action was in the Avengers, it really was the character interplay that skyrocketed the movie, imo. The cap/IronMan verbal battles, really had that Marvel feel. And who knew Evans had the chops to go toe to toe with Downey? Good script and fine directing.

I don't think they have a choice. The real problem is RDJ's age. He'll be in his mid-50's by A3, so unless they gets some cajones and address it head on, they'll have to replace him.

Age is less of a factor with Iron Man than most super hero characters, but it's a good point. Evidently he broke his ankle doing wire work for IM3, so durability is a concern even with all the CGI.

If third films for Cap and Thor aren't immediately on the table, Whedon could do a semi Peter Jackson and film two at once. Doubt they would do it that way, but it could maximize the time of all involved. I guess they'll start shooting A2 this fall.
