I really liked this movie. I think most spider-man fan can get into it and appreciate the take on the characters.
Not to mention Stan lee's greatest cameo of all marvel films. Hilarious as spidey and lizard are fighting behind him

I also like the reboot but I'm kind of split. I like Garfield as a less sad Peter (In the final scene Tobey said Spidey was a curse where I always felt Spidey was his release) . I like Gwen more than MJ. Capt Stacey was great. Uncle Ben and Aunt May were more real (although Robertson's Ben has much more emotion, tough call). Webshooters. And I can live with the costume.

But as a whole I was more satisfied with the first one. I guess because it was all right from the comic (minus Goblin) so it satisifed the fan boy in me. The new one has better individual parts but as a whole it didn't feel as complete. Still a good movie as an updated Spiderman. It left me looking forward to the next one.

I didn't see anything overtly wrong with the new one at all. Everything was fine, which is probably the way I'd describe it best. My wife and I took the kids, everyone enjoyed themselves, but no one has really asked to see it again.

I have yet to buy this on DVD or Blu-ray, but I did see it theatrically and it was better than I expected it to be. I enjoyed Andrew Garfield as Pete/Spider-Man and feel like he'll likely grow more comfortable with the role in the next installment. I liked Gwen Stacy way more than MJ, mainly because she was not always either moping or screaming (plus, I'm just NOT a huge fan of Kirsten Dunst). I LOVED LOVED LOVED Denis Leary as Captain Stacy, but felt like they really gave his character the short stick by killing him off in the first movie. Leary/Stacy easily carried as much supporting weight as J.K. Simmons in the first SPIDER-MAN, just in a different way and his character should have been allowed to evolve and even help Pete out down the road. I liked Martin Sheen's Uncle Ben, but was only "meh" on Sally Field as Aunt May. And that, of course, leaves The Lizard, one of my all-time fave Spidey foes who got woefully short-changed in this film. If there was ever a "villain" that needed Raimi's sensibilities, it was The Lizard. Instead, the character got turned into a hodpodge of bad visual effects combined with an actor who was, IMHO, only so-so in the role as Curt Connors....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

This Spiderman was much better than the third installment. I was afraid when the team changed it would really hurt the series but it seems to have picked up rather well. While I dont think its the best its at least as good as Spiderman 2. The action scenes involving spidey were probably the best of all the films. He actually LOOKED like spiderman in action, including the poses. Garfields acting as Peter struck me as sorta odd though. (Not that the acting was bad, it was more how he played the character)

While I did think it was a good film overall, some of my problems with it were still bothersome. I felt the origin (while interesting) was over done and a little over complicated and took way to much time away from the rest of the film. Was there really a need to do the origin again?

My biggest problem with it was the Lizard himself. He looked way to CGI-ish. The effects on him looked like they could have been from twelve years ago or so. It made me think it may have been rushed. I never could warm up to the design either.

Looking forward to the next one. Hope theres more daylight scenes though. The "dark atmostphere" is so '90s, lol.

I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one. For me the weakest part of the film was the Lizard - too big, too fake, too boring. Uncle Ben was a little wooden too IMO.

I thought this film had some strengths the other series did not have, but fell well short in other areas. While I liked Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, I felt Sally Fields was too far removed from the character depicted in the comics and other films. I loved Denis Leary as Captain Stacy. But felt he was assigned the role of token "victim" way too early. His role in Pete's life was so much more involved in the comics. And his final thoughts to Peter are poorly worded, given Pete's supposed moral lesson and the fate of Gwen Stacy. I thought Garfield did an admirable enough job as Pete, but had some issues with how he did some things. The morality of his lessons were very loosely followed here. While he felt responsible for letting the crook rob that counter store clerk and get away (resulting in Ben's death), he didn't have a problem stealing the web cartridges and technology from Oscorp to make his web shooters. So his sense of right and wrong was a little too loose for a guy who was in the midst of reform. Spiderman himself was pretty good. And I liked the fact he could be hurt. But I hated that he never had a signature "hero" theme like Raimi's Spider-man did. And I have nothing for the Lizard. He looked bad in pre-production. And amounted to little more than an after thought in the film itself. Poorly executed and aimless. A hero shines brightest when he has a equally evil villain. That was missing here. That also appears to be a problem for the next installment. We'll see.

I can't Stand Dunst is the 1st 3 Films...., so with Ease, this was my Favorite Spider-man, Based on that Alone. She is Just s Unatractive to me ..., and I don't understand How Parker got so damn whipped with that character with Her. Rami Missed the Mark with casting Her imo.

I was a Fan of the 1st 3 outside of that...
After seeing this 1, I was a big time fan. I really liked the Lizard.

I agree with many things you guys said, especially the new Spidey lacking a memorable theme soundtrack, it really had none, and that, and the Lizard, were the weakest part of the film.

I also never liked Dunst as MJ either, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, blows her outta the water left and right, it's not even close.

I think I am with most that I wasn't excited to see it but loved it. It was on par with Raimi but because Raimi was first it had more of the excitement of finally seeing Spidey on the big screen. Anything that comes later would have a hard time over riding that factor.
I was surprised they did not go with a long snout lizard but just last night I was reading an illustrated history of Spider-man to the kids and remembered that he originally did NOT have the long snout. The movie face is dead on to his earliest appearences.

                        PS I also loathed Dunst

I need to watch ASM again (I have the Blu-Ray, just haven't got around to it), but while it didn't give me that visceral charge of seeing the first Raimi film for the first time, I have to say that this movie seemed to gel more as a whole than the first movie, and maybe even 2. I really like Spider-Man 2. I do think Garfield played a more likable Peter Parker that you can root for, as opposed to Maguire's version, who seemed to be somewhat bi-polar from scene to scene. Garfield's gangly frame really worked well in the costume, and I appreciated the quips, missing from Maguire's performance for the most part. He never really had the voice for that.

I would say it's the third best Spider-Man film but it didn't do much for me. I never bought Garfield as Peter, even my wife said "as a teen I'd be all over that kid" and the whole "turn-the-city-into-lizards-like-me" plot was borrowed wholesale from the Superfriends.

Visually I liked the swinging scenes better but it does not a movie make. Would have also prefered makeup to a cgi Lizard.

I missed MacGuire and JK Simmons.

Emma Stone was a bright point, I also never liked the movie Mary Jane.

I loved the Lizard, and honestly thought he had some of the best CGI I've seen. His loose skin in particular was amazing, you could actually see it sliding over his muscles when he was moving and fighting. It had a real elasticity and weight to it, and looked very natural. I also bought the score album as soon as it came out, and found James Horner's theme fantastic. It's very uplifting, and not quite as sad as Danny Elfman's.

I just saw it last night. I'm glad people liked it, but I wasn't crazy about it.

I thought the physical appearance of Spider-Man and his super powers was a HUGE improvement from the Raimi movies. Not so much the Spider-Man uniform, but all the physical actions of Spider-Man - the way he shot webs, jumped and swung.

I liked that the new Spider-Man's voice was less wimpy - but that's about all I liked.

While Spider-Man sounded less wimpy - I thought the movie itself was a lot wimpier - and I'm actually surprised people feel the opposite way here. For one thing, there seemed to be A LOT more talking in these movies than the Raimi versions.

The rehashing of the origin with the added details and extra emphasis on Peter's relationship with Ben didn't add anything to me emotionally - it just made the movie feel padded and overlong. I actually thought the death of Ben was much more engaging in the economic Raimi version. Maybe because the emotion is suppose to come from Peter's reaction - not from the audience knowing Ben. For some reason Uncle Ben and Aunt May just did not resonate with me in this version at all. Maybe the actors are just too familiar to me?

Wimpy: exchanging the origin's famous wrestling scene for a scene where Peter steals a bottle of chocolate milk really underscores what I'm talking about. Maybe the wrestling scene is a little campy and unrealistic (in some ways*) - but it's a lot more fun.

*Someone clear this up for me, why does "T-Bone" the cashier even think to ask Peter for help with the robber? In wrestler scene he was asked to help because he was a wrestler who just won a match - here, Peter's just a wimpy kid who was trying to buy chocolate milk. A more minor point, is "T-Bone" the owner of the store? Why else would he care that much about the robbery? He doesn't seem to care about the customers - so I just assumed he was a disgruntled worker.

Wimpy: Flash openly shares his feelings with Peter about bullying.

Wimpy: It took The Lizard a long long time to start hurting people.

Wimpy: Peter reveals to Gwen that he's Spider-Man pretty damned quick.

Wimpy: Peter gives up on Captain Stacy's dying wish even quicker. Even Gwen shows more resolve - choosing not to argue with Peter once she figures out why he's avoiding her.

There were a lot of dialog scenes that seemed to repeat themselves over and over again - and I kept waiting for somebody to punch somebody already.

Gwen Stacy works with Dr. Conner? That's an incredibly convenient coincidence - but for some reason it doesn't seem to economize the script much. Couldn't that squeeze out a couple of the scenes with them hanging out together at school? There seemed to be a lot of those.

One other thing I did like - I liked the dinner scene when Captain Stacy figured out that Spider-Man was more motivated by vengeance than justice - and I thought that aspect could have played a bigger roll in the movie in some way to freshen it up from the original series - instead of all the time spent on The Lizard's origin or on the mystery of Peter's parents. Maybe that mystery isn't as compelling to me as it is to others. That story line seems to be heading down a predictable path to me.
