^Could be. His Superman Returns is actually a pretty good example of this. Good ideas, but not for a film relaunching a dormant franchise. And the structure was a rehash of Superman:The Movie, with a very dreary, unsatisfying ending.

The other problem for Superman was all the money spent years prior on failed attempts. Like when Tim Burton was going to direct and when Kevin Smith wrote a script. I had come to understand that all that waste got tacked on to Superman Returns.

Part of the problem for Jack the Giant Slayer is that in many theaters it was only available in IMAX 3D. I don't know about most of you, but I don't have $17 to spend on a ticket for a movie like that. I'll gladly spend it on Avengers or Batman or Harry Potter. Eventually someone has to step up and tell Imax that not every movie is right for that format. The other part of "Jack's" problem according to my staff who saw the film was that it was just terrible. Story and dialog.

I don't care to see another Xmen with Hallie Barrie or any of that cast. I loved the First Class take and I was really hoping they'd continue with them. Time will tell. I'll still be there to see it. Hopefully its good.

I heard that too, but I'm not sure which is true. I also heard Returns was it's own giant money pit.

There's a lengthy Entertainment Weekly article covering the business and cost of Superman Returns here:

The whole thing seemed like a bit of a fiasco. Seems like Singer and the studio were butting heads over budget. Too much "vision", too much pressure, too many reshoots.

          Here's a sample:

"Warner Bros. eventually greenlit Superman Returns at $184.5 million, though not until after what Singer calls a ''terrible, terrible night'' of budget slashing that included nixing a full-scale, $20 million-plus downtown Metropolis set that would later have become part of an Australian theme park. Digital effects would create cityscapes or extend the sets. However, the cornfield is real: To create the Kent family farm, the production planted its own crops. ''That corn cost $50 an ear to grow,'' says film legend Eva Marie Saint, who plays Clark's beloved Ma Kent, and who insists she isn't joking. ''That's just one tiny story about why this movie cost so much.''

Singer tweeted a picture of headshots of the cast, which confirmed that Daniel Cudmore will return as Colossus and that Fan Bingbing and Booboo Stewart had joined the cast.

Also, according to Bryan Singer, he had a two-hour discussion with James Cameron, director of the time-travel films The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, about how to make the time-travel concept feasible and workable within the film.

Interesting that Singer should feel the need to do that... Just because Cameron made the Terminator doesn't automatically make him the world authority on time travel in popular culture.
I'm sure there were other, more knowledgable sources he could have consulted if he felt it necessary to talk to anyone.

I don't recall lots of hard science in the Terminator movies anyway. Sort of like a bunch of lightning and Shazam, nekkid Arnie shows up. All the paradoxes caused by the time travel are older concepts than Cameron's movies. Maybe Singer is just not to well read with stuff before 78 or so.

That's weird. Didn't much of Cameron's Terminator concept originate with Harlan Ellison? Why not call him?

Cameron lifted the Terminator concept from 2 of Ellison's Outer Limits stories. He would make a great afvisor as he did advise J. Michael Straczinsky of Babylon 5. I would think a better advisor would be Leonard Nimoy because he directed Star Trek 4, (plus having been in many Star Trek time travel TV episodes).

I think Singer is more salesman than director these days. He can sure talk a good game, but he doesn't seem to know how to translate them to film. He's already having trouble with this project. If I were a studio I would not have him. His projects all become money pits.

That wouldn't have been any worse than some of their previous casting decisions in those movies.

Brian Singer has developed such a lousy track record of over-hyped, poorly made films, I have reached a point of almost not wanting to support anything associated with him anymore. He sure talks a good game, but hasn't delivered in a long time.
