Since everyone is mentioning more than ONE artist I thought I would add in another one of my favorites: Ernie Chan and his Conan.

She was an inker/artist/colorist and could do every genre in comics. Here art on Not Brand Echh is FANTASTIC. I think she also was the only female artist in comics during the 50's/60's. Definitely was a pioneer for future female artists.
Don't forget Ramona Fradon during that same time period

For some reason I always thought Fradon was post Severin. I always thought of her as a 70's artist along with Trina Robbins. Learn something new every day.

Fradon's uninked pencils are gorgeous. Same with Nick Cardy. If you're ever at a con where they appear, go by and look at their sketches. Just really cool stuff.

these two artist would be my first choice. With a host of a 100 or more there after.

Swan was a hell of an Illustrator, and was a work horse for DC......

                        Jim Aparo & Gene Colon.

Never tire of them--they didn't just have draftsmanship, but also style.

Agree about Fradon and Cardy. Ramona was at the Pittsburgh Comicon a few years ago, and I wasn't familiar with her work. Nate told me that he saw the most beautiful Wonder Woman sketch at a table. That was Ramona's booth. I have two sketches by her now, and I hope to see her again and get more. If you see her at a show, trust me, you need to buy something from her. Not only is it beautiful, it's very affordable.
