The 5 I always pick-up no matter what they do are:

    - George Perez
    - Jim Starlin
    - Mike Grell
    - Mike Kaluta
    - Charles Vess

...and if I had to pick one out of the 5, it would be George Perez.

NOthing new or insightful on my part, but the top three in order are George Perez, Alex Ross and John Byrne. THe rest of the pack, and there's a lot of artists whose work I adore, are a far distance away from my big three.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

With the exception of Swan, I like everyone mentioned thus far. Never could get into Swan's chunky, middle age Superman. When I think of Superman I go to Neal Adams or Jack Burnley.

        to the list I would also add;
        Olivier Coipel
        Dave Cockrum
        Mac Raboy
        CC Beck
        Hey! Check out the pictures.

Art Adams, or Michael Turner!! I always felt his Longshot run was under rated. George Perez is tops as well, with Marc Silvestri, Mike Zeck and Mike Mignola, rounding out the list. Jim Lee was better during his marvel days but I do like his Bat!

It's more character specific for me, so I will agree with John Byrne/George Perez on overall work. Beyond that I haven't seen Jim Aparo mentioned yet (Unless I missed it). Aparo's Batman was the Batman I grew up with it and probably the first artist's work I could identify just by looking at it.

My favorite comic book artists are Alex Ross and Jose Luis Garcia. I grew up thinking Garcia's DC art was the way superheroes were supposed to look. As a child of the late seventies and early eighties his stuff seemed everywhere (Super Powers was a favorite toyline of mine and one of the first I noticed the art on the packaging!). Alex Ross is however my top artist. I love the way he portrays characters in the extreme lighting and having bought several books on his art I love his stuff even more.

Jose Luis Garcia is a favorite as well. His stuff is the most iconic from my childhood.

My current fave's are Francis Manapul and Dustin Nguyen.

Past favorites include Norm Breyfogle, Jeff Smith, Jim Lee.

                              Kirby....easy number one.

                              Ditko and Romita Sr. follow.

I think Alex Ross is the most talented artist and love his work, but I was asked for my favorite so gotta stick with Kirby.

If you are a Kirby fan and haven't at least looked at the compilation of his and Simon's Sandman comics from the 1940s, it's worth at least browsing through at your local comic shop or book store.

The stories are better-than-average golden-age, super-hero fare, but the action and storytelling on display is just at another level when compared to their contemporaries. I've had the book for several years but had not really looked it over and read the stories until recently. When you compare the Sandman stories — the yellow-and-purple costume and Sandy era — to Batman and Captain America comics of the same time period, you really get the feel for how innovative Kirby was. He truly created the visual language of action/adventure comics.

Kirby's style isn't my favorite. I tend to like more realistic versions of the characters — the Neal Adams school or effect. But clearly, Adams couldn't have been Adams or any other favorite from the 60s and 70s on couldn't have developed into their own style without Kirby.

He was truly a genius storyteller who influenced everyone that came after him and most of his better contemporaries. Of course, I'm probably preaching to the choir, but working on a very similar feature, Kirby's work on Sandman just blew all the Batman artists out of the water.
