True...but the theme alone more than makes up for all the negatives easily.

I think the "Can You Read My Mind" lyrics were more or less forced on Williams. Sign of the times, when lots of TV and movie stars were cutting records at the time. The "disco" version is even more disturbing (it's on Rhino's awesome deluxe edition of the soundtrack), but as KW says above, the Love Theme from Superman is eloquently beautiful.

saw it last nite and really enjoyed it.
while I had problems with a few plot points and some uneven "comic" scenes, it was very entertaining and well paced.
I'm a big fan of Raimi's movies (even the deservedly maligned 3rd) but IMO those films never got the "look" right.
this new take is visually AMAZING. spidey looks incredible! he moves, swings and fights like I always thought he should on the big screen.
Raimi may have fleshed out his characters with more emotional depth but Webb has a way with color and light that makes this movie a marvel to behold.
the lizard was a bit disappointing in that he didn't look very "lizard-like" to me but when spidey is onscreen you won't care.

I really liked the movie. I rate it above 3 (of course) and on par with one. As of right now Spiderman 2 is still my favorite Spiderman movie. I tend to think Macguire was a better Peter while Garfield is a better Spiderman. I also seem to like the college age Parker more. I do still think that the Lizard should have had a snout. If it could not have been done in CG they could have used a advanced animatronic head for close ups, in that area they don't even try anymore. I didn't like seeing the origin again so soon then again I felt a reboot was far too soon. I give the movie a 8 out of 10.

Emeraldknight and I saw it yesterday and were both pleasantly surprised by the results. Here is my review:

Garfield and Stone played the roles with great depth and emotion. I am sooo happy to have the classic "Gwen" in the movies now. Denis Leary was incredible as Captain Stacy and Martin Sheen was a superior Uncle Ben compared to the Raimi version. For all the gripes I had about the suit, I never even thought about it during the film. This Spider-man was much closer to the comic book version I fell in love with as a kid. So I was thrilled with the personality and classic posing throughout. I didn't think I would like Sally Field as Aunt May, but she was very convincing in the role. Took some getting use to seeing Aunt May as a brunette. But, just like with Spidey's costume, it was trivial compared to the performance.

***Spoiler Alert*** (Don't read if you haven't seen it yet)

Things I liked - I loved the fact Spider-man was more grounded in his abilities. When he got hurt, he stayed hurt. And he couldn't swing across town in five minutes. It took work and it showed. The scenario that led to Ben Parker's death was brilliant. I liked that situation because when the thief threw the milk at Peter, I think most people would have considered it poetic justice and moved on. And when Ben was shot, it was immediate, brutal, and final. No final glances or words between him and Peter. He was simply gone. It was far more visceral this time around. It didn't feel ceremonial like the Raimi version. It hurt. Because you really liked Uncle Ben as a person and not because he was just a 'nice old man'. And you absolutely understood Pete's bond with him, so that added to the moment. I also loved the fact that after the movie was over, his problems were far from being resolved. That gave it a much more believable touch. His problems shouldn't be able to fix themselves just because he becomes Spider-man. So I liked the fact our hero is left with the weight of the world on his back. THAT is classic Spider-man.

Things I didn't like - The Lizard. Abysmal. He looked like he belonged with Venom in Spider-man 3. Never struck a single pulse with me. Given the depth of Spider-man's origin, the Lizard was comparatively an afterthought. I realize Doc Connors is pivotal in Pete's past so I do like the fact he survived. But every time I saw him as the Lizard talking, he reminded me of the Grinch. Even had the same voice. I was waiting for him to say, " I must stop Christmas from coming!" Think about that the next time you see it. Spot on. And the whole chain of events between Captain Stacy dying, what he said, and the ending left me feeling a little conflicted about how the director chose to end it. I think Captain Stacy should have said exactly what he said in the comics which was, "Take care of her Peter." By saying" Keep her out of it." That changes the responsibility on Peter ten fold if she does indeed die. Because, unlike trying to protect her, Peter has chosen to bring her into his life of danger which dilutes his lesson of responsibility. So, I'm little leery of how they will handle that. They may not kill her. But there was some foreshadowing in this film. The spanning shot of the George Washington bridge. Him throwing Gwen out the window and then catching her during her fall with his webbing. So it definitely sounds like their laying the ground work to have her die.

Overall though a very good film. But I'm not going to 'disown' the Raimi films because this one clearly took notes from those movies and built upon those established ideas. Mark Webb definitely got some things better, but he also followed the framework that Raimi developed. So Spider-man 1 & 2 will always be classics in my book. But this film is the Spider-man of TODAY..and justly deserving. Now as far as effects go, I think there was actually just as much, if not more, CGI in this film compared to Raimi's movies. The difference is these had better technology behind them and so, subsequently, looked better. Definitely the best effects in all the films so far if you exclude the Lizard. I still prefer Elfman's soundtrack over this new one. Horner seemed to be doing a greatest hits package through this film. I heard Titanic themes more than once and even some scores that sounded like they were lifted from Halloween H20. The soundtrack was bizarre. Overall though I give the film 9/10. What it got right, it REALLY got right. BTW did anyone notice it was Gwen who gave Spidey his name? When he pulled her to him she said, "Oh your that Spider...Maaaan!" I liked that.

Saw this today...great movie, but I'm not sure just yet where this ranks with me as far as all-time super-hero movies. At this point, The Avengers still beats it for me this summer...

The movie has done very well, but so far it's not outperforming the previous entries. Still very much a success.

I wonder how much the massive power outages affected its opening night. Locally (Columbus) only about half the theaters were up and running for the midnight showing.

The Avengers and Spiderman were good but......

The Dark Knight rises will surpass all superhero movies for me this year! I already know it.

As MIB41 mentioned, he and I did indeed go to see THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN yesterday.

The usher mentioned to Tom that "TED" had been selling out all day and that folks had been actually LEAVING TAS-M halfway through stating they thought it sucked. Plus, we were in a relatively large theater late on a very, very, very hot Saturday afternoon and it was only about 1/3 full. Only compounded my fears that we were about to get delivered a turd of ginormous proportions.

That being said, y'all better sit down....

                            ::drumroll::

I absolutely (with the exception of two items) loved the film!!

TK and I went over the local Mexcian constabulatory afterwards to grab a bite to eat and quench our thirst and spent a good portion of time dissecting this particular iteration of Spider-Man. I told him that I can easily see Maguire and Garfield as equals when it comes to the role. Emma Stone was great as Gwen and Denis Leary was---well, Denis Leary! I've never seen him do anything I dislike and his take on Captain Stacy was spot-on for a younger version of the character as we came to know him in the comics. He was such a good character, in fact, that his fate in the movie left me feeling less than happy. Sheen and Field were great as Ben and May Parker, would-be parents to Pete without the "homespunniness" and slight corn of the characters in Raimi's versions. I would give this movie easily a 5 out of 5 rating had they not screwed up The Lizard, in both appearance and characterization, as badly as they did. It's largely the same fate the befell the original SPIDER-MAN, except that Willem Dafoe was able to elevate the character of Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin past the goofy looking armor and into the realm of being a truly disturbed individual.

I'm still composing my thoughts regarding the movie itself and will likely post more about it later, but for now, I'm gonna sit down to a nice, healthy helping of crow, eat it and enjoy it...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I can't imagine a large group of people leaving ASM for Ted. Sounds like they should have went and saw Ted first anyway.

                                glad you liked it

i'm thinking that usher was a complete social reject idiot. i have no plans to see ted. it looks like something my nephew would like (he likes most things i think are stupid). that is personal opinion BUT i highly doubt anyone walked out on spider-man let alone multiple people at one theater.

and as far as TED selling out - it made less than Half the money spidey did over the weekend and 20 million less total with 4 weekend days additional in release.
so I am sure he is wrong about that stat about ted selling out while spidey was not.
