    >Director Duncan Jones turned down an offer to direct the film, though he thought the script was "great"

I'm wondering if this is another case of them slapping a known name on a generic script they had lying around.

Huh, yeah - I hadn't thought of that. When I read that I questioned if he was being totally genuine - like he was being gentlemanly slash not wanting to burn bridges. Pure speculation, of course. It might be a great script - but that trailer didn't do a lot for me.

These days, they want to tone down the comic book element to such an extent, mainly to pull in a larger audience. It all becomes "realistic", dark and grimy, like a Punisher movie.
Thing is, Dredd is over-the-top, a bit crazy, with garish colors and tongue-in-cheek humor. He needs that. I remember Dredd shooting a guy's leg off because he's running too fast in a pedestrian zone.

In this new Dredd universe, you'll never see Judge Death. And that's a shame.

They do; but that's not just a "these days" kind of thing. Remember the Hulk, travelling the country catching gang members and cattle rustlers? *sigh* I think that's a waste though; comics are a cheap way of testing the water, to see what audiences are into.

          >It all becomes "realistic", dark and grimy, like a Punisher movie.

I can't believe you used "realistic" and "Punisher movie" in the same sentence! Sure, they always make the Punisher more genheric action hero (which is easier to do than with.... oh, say.... the Hulk) but action heroes aren't very realistic either. But they DO live up to expectation.... which I think is the key. AND the problem: you've got a mass audience that wants new thrills, but in exactly the sort of way they're used to.

My fave was when he chased a perp down the throat of a dinosaur that'd swallowed him, so's to bring him in.

              >Early Dredd review

That's an oddly non-commital review.... but they sure pack in the adjectives, huh? KInda feels like the reviewer knows this is based on a comic, but has never read the comic and therefore doesn't know exactly what to say about the adaption.

Another suitably violent clip from the movie...
