Favorite issue of any comic?

Not necessarily your favorite title or run, but which sole issue of a book has it all in your opinion? Great art, cool story, guest appearances, whatever.

I was thinking about it earlier, and in a lot of ways, I consider Avengers Annual # 10 to be sort of a perfect comic, if there is such a thing. I probably would have changed the cover slightly--it's just a bit too busy--but really has an old-school charm to it.

Easy pick for me...Amazing Spider-Man #121. The good guys alway win right? At least when you were a kid growing up in the 1970's or 1980's. My dad was a Korean War vet...saw heavy action on the front lines which I'll discuss later in General Buzz, but my parents sheltered me from the Vietnam War which was going on when I was really young....don't know when it ended off of the top of my head but I would have been 5 or 6 if it was 1974. Like I said, heroes always win until I read this issue (I was probably 11 or 12 when I read it and can still remember my jaw dropping open).

Really hard to narrow it down to 1. But when I sold off my back issues the one I kept was Superman 149. The imaginary story where Luthor kills Superman. It's got a great Curt Swan cover, probably inked by George Klein. My favorite inker on Swan's work, yeah even better than Murphy Anderson to me. To me the 138-149 encapsulates the silver-age Superman perfectly. I'm going by memory, but 138 had a cool Titano cover, 139 Lori Lemaris guest stars, 141 had Superman visiting his parents on Krypton prior to its destruction. 142 had a big dragon breathing fire on Clark revealing he's Superman, 143 had a Bizzaro story with a Karloff-like Frankenstein on the cover, 144 another great cover with Superman, Supergirl and Krypto in space watching Earth explode, 146 was the 1960s retelling of Superman's origin with a very cool cover of Jor-El and Lara blasting baby Kal-El off amidst the destruction of Krypton, 147 it's the Legion of Super Villians first appearance with the cover an homage to Adventure 247, 148 a Mr. Mxy adventure and 149 my aforementioned favorite.

Also love Fantastic Four 4,5,6 — first appearance of Doom, Subby and then a Doom and Subby vs. FF throwdown.

FF- 25 and 26: I always kind of saw this as Kirby and Lee's version of King Kong, the cover to 26 is certainly an homage. The Hulk is tearing up New York and first the FF try to stop him in 25 and then the Avengers show up to help in 26.

Captain America 250, 253, 254, 255 — Cap for prez, Brother Blood showdown, great history/origin of Cap issue

Spider-Man 11 and 12 featuring his battle with Doc Octopus. No the first but the best.

Green Lantern 11, the first appearance of a bunch of alien GLs meeting together and 40 the first team-up of Hal and Alan Scott, plus its the issue that inspired Crisis on Infinite Earths, thought that was a good thing for a long time, now I'm not so sure.

DC Special 29 — Origin of the JSA with that great Neal Adams cover.

Batman 251 and 255 — Adams art in both, the first his and O'Neil's classic reworking of the Joker back into something to be scared off and the second a really cool werewolf story also wth Prof. Milo.

Justice League 19, 21, 22 — loved the secret identity angle to 19; and 21 and 22, of course, brought back the JSA.

Avengers 3 and 4 where Hulk and Subby fight the Avengers and it leads right in to No. 4 which revives Cap.

X-Men 133, Wolverine in the sewers and 137 — really loved the pacing of this issue where each character goes over why they want to fight to save Jean, and then the ending, back when good stories were told in the comics and not spoiled in press releases.

Wolverine mini series by Miller and Claremont. To me, nothing more ever needed to be written about the character.

Superman 300 – imaginary tale where the Russians beat the US to Superman's space capsule when it lands, and Mark Millar's inspiration for Superman Red Sun.

All-Star Comics No. 69 — big throwdown between mind-controlled JSAers and their teammates in the Bat Cave, triumphant return of GA Superman at the end.

JLA 142 — Untold origin of the JLA and the inspiration for some of Cooke's Final Frontier and Waid' JLA Year One, which are both excellent reads but not sentimental favorites.

Action Comics 500 — a great retracing of the E1 Superman's history to that point

FF 236 — excellent issue by Byrne that shows what could have been for the FF if not for their space accident. My favorite issue of his excellent run on the title.

Justice League of America #200 is a big favorite...

Though I like this one, it is the Zatanna and Firestorm joining period prior to that I like best of JLA (170's I think)

I also really loved the Daredevil issue that ended with a cliffhanger Bullseye over him in a boxing ring -I no longer have it and my copy never had a cover. not sure what number (early/mid 70s) -I got it at a garge sale and read it 100 times

And going against popular opinion I love Amazing Spider-man 400 -death of aunt may. i thought the whole clone thing fine but it was the way he told may and the way the other one couldn't even be with her. it was the issue that brought pete (or ben) to a new level for me. well written and decent art. n-of course a short time later marvel erased this piece of history

i don't read anything now. well i read back issues and tiny titans to my kids.

i am sure i am missing many of my favorites.

i will revisit this thread after i pull out my comics next.

I can't remember the issue #, but it was the X-men issue where Kitty Pryde is telling a story to Illyana Rasputin, in her pre-Magik days.

It was the tale of Pirate Kitty, Colossus, Lockheed the talking dragon, the Phoenix, a cursed prince, the Bamfs (they were hoot worthy), the Beast (a really messed up version of Wolvie), and the Genie (Ororo); as well as the kind and powerful wizard that went about on a flying mini carpet (Xavier).

They don't write stuff like that anymore.

The Killing Joke was Horrible .... "Death of Babs" sorta.

Actually Batgirl was pretty boring by that point in her career. It was the spinal injury that made her a more complex character as Oracle. The subsequent attempts to "replace" her as Batgirl is what made fans cry out for the return of the original...which is what you've got in the DCnU so quit complaining. Full circle
