Sad to see this, anybody who grew up in the bronze age knows what a work horse this guy was.

RIP Mr. Chan. Here's one of my fave EC pieces...

sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

What a talent...he was one of my favorites, and that Batman issue 277 is my all time favorite. Great detective story with a cool Scooby-Doo type mystery.

RIP, Ernie. His inks did every bit as much for Conan during the 70s and 80s as Buscema's pencils, and my favorite rendition of the Hulk was his.

Loved his COnan and Batman. He's my favorite inker on Buscema's pencils. He did do a great Hulk. His work was underappreciated by fandom in my opinion.

Workhorse is right. His interior work was always fantastic. His inks on Conan were insanely detailed, and he did a fine job on Batman. DC put him on almost every cover for quite a stretch, and the results varied. You could tell they overloaded him and he had to rush with background details and correct anatomy.

But when he was allowed to really give his work the attention it deserved, no one could touch him.

              Another great one gone.

2 Greats within a 2 week period. Fellow Philippines artist Tony Dezuniga was the other great that passed away a week ago:

Sad news and a fine artist. At least I have his issues of CONAN and a couple pieces of original art to remember this exceptional talent! He will be missed.

I don't know what was in the water in the Philippines back then, but they had some phenomenal talent coming over here in the 70s: Chan, DeZuniga, Alcala, Niño, Tanghal, Redondo, Talaoc...just crazy how much talent was there.

Ironically, it was Tony deZuniga who got ernie Chua into DC. He was a great artist, his covers defined an era of DC Comics in the late 70s. Met him at Pittsburgh con a few years ago, really nice man. RIP

What I love about Ernie's work was not only did he do covers for the mainstream titles like Supermana, Flash and Batman but he did a lot of the lower tier as well, like The Joker, Kobra, Claw...Very versatile.
