After some thought, I'm going to go with what Bill just said above. I reserve the right to be totally wrong though.

I still think Spidey will do well though, but not the numbers of the previous movies.

^ As a DC fan those GL numbers make me cringe...
Yep. They're ugly. Had Green Lantern been a hit, The Man of Steel film would have been out this December and there likely would have been a Flash film for next summer.

But with GL tanking, Warners' confidence in its B List heroes (anyone other than Batman and Superman) went out the window. Superman was held back for a 2013 summer tentpole and all talk of other hero films died for the time being.

I don't think Spider-Man will do that great. It's too much like what happened with the Hulk movies. Or the Punisher. Dark Knight Rises will do good because there will be enough people curious about how this compares to the last Batman film. Avengers? Not sure.

After seeing the newest Spider-man trailer, and with the sheer number of Spider-man fans out there - kids and adults - my picks are:

          1. Spider-man
          2. Dark Knight
          3. Avengers

I just think that once they start airing those Spider-man trailers -and word of mouth gets around about how good it is, Spider-man will rule the box office.

Warners has really been desperately trying to find the next Harry Potter franchise that will guarantee a return on their investment an annual basis. As you well stated, the next tentpole for their summer seasons. It seems like a near impossible task given how much Potter was lighting in a bottle. It's very difficult to manufacture that kind of pop culture phenomenon by committee. Dark Knight Rises is their sure bet this year, but after that, it's pretty much up in the air.

As much as we love to root for the DC comics themselves, at the end of the day, I'm a bit fearful that it's the movies which will ultimate determine the fate of the publishing division, based on how much they can successfully exploit the properties and content generated in the books.

On the flip side, even with their loss of market share in publishing, Marvel seems to have completely justified their comics division as R&D for movie content given just how much of the past decades comics have reached the big screen, much to the fans delight. From using their top tier artists to do concept designs, to their having their "architects" as consultants for the director, producers and talent to draw upon (a few of them have talked about their script contributions that have made it to screen). I have no doubts that this summer's Avengers film was built squarely on the shoulders of Millar and Hitch's Ultimates as a loose blueprint.

Warner's gave Geoff Johns a good deal of influence in the GL movie, particularly the re-writes of the script, as CCO and producer, and in the end, the movie didn't work. Don't know how much of the failure can be placed at his feet but I'm sure everyone involved with the project is deflecting blame some place.

Who knew Campbell, an admittedly fine director, would take the job even though it seems he had little faith in the project, based on interviews following the movie.

But as a consequence, pretty much all talk of Flash, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel or Shazam movies have been squelched, publicly. No doubt, the year prior to GL, the DC heroes were supposed to replace Potter in Warner's lineup, but since GL tanked nobody from Warners has been beating that drum at least publicly.

WB may have to let the rest of DC's pantheon lie low just to get the "stink" of GL off the next film. If they announce Flash right now, everyone is going to say "GL tanked!'. But if they wait a year or so, the smell won't be as bad.

I've waited 4+ years for the Avenger Movie, and for everything to unravel with the Tie-in Flicks ..., I hope to God I am not disapointed in anyway....

There's always been certain aspects of the Nolan Bat-Universe I just don't like, and others I do..., Don't get me wrong .., it is The Best Batman Franchise Ever...., it's just with certain stuff ...., I just wish it were better..., I dunno If I will even see this in Theaters..., I never did see The last 1 in Theaters ..., or Begins for that matter.

I have absolutely No Interest in seeing Spider-man in the Theaters.

Why, that's exactly how I feel about the Green Lantern movie. Didn't see it in the theaters. Won't see it on dvd. I have zero desire or interest.

I hope you're right, but I think Warners has cut its losses. If the Superman movie does well, there might be hope for others.

I'm like you Jason, I want the Avengers film to be great. Maybe it will be. And like Derek, I'm now looking forward to Spidey after seeing the trailer.

And while Nolan's Batman isn't perfect — I'd still love to see the traditional Batman costume used on screen — it's close enough for me to support.

Spidey has thus far failed to catch my interest... Batman is really worrying me with all the talk of "The End", I'm afraid they will do something stupid with it,

Avengers has been built up to so beautifully from Iron Man through Hulk, IM2, Cap and Thor... I don't see how it can miss (especially as the trailers have been great)

I will say this is very influenced by the fact I'm a big Batman fan but judging by the money the Dark Knight made and Iron Man and how the other Avenger movies did I'd have to say...

                              Dark Knight Rises
                              Avengers
                              Spiderman

I will say I didn't have any interest in seeing Spiderman until this last trailer came out. I was really worried it was going to end up being "Twilight" Spiderman.

                                not a contest

                                Batman by a mile
Avengers is a strong bet for number 2
Spidey being a reboot is probably in 3rd BUT who knows -with the character's following if the story is compelling it could beat avengers
superman returns again - is that 12 or 13 - either way, it is the next superman to miss the mark.
