I remember back in the late seventies (i was probably six to eight) one of my favorite cartoons was the revamped Popeye from Hanna-Barbara. Looking back on it now, I find that cartoon kinda bad compared to earlier ones.
If kids have access to that comic they might enjoy it.
I dont even have Boomerang!Comment

It definitely was a bold experiment, but unfortunately stripped away what was so unique and charming about Popeye in the first place. Written by Peter David, at a point where I loved his Hulk.
I'm speculating Captain Strong might have been an influence... The years of Julie Schwartz helming Superman editorial were so joyously demented at times.

Of course nothing blew my young mind more than this Mad Super Special.
What is Superman, Popeye and Tarzan doing to each other? And it's not like the earlier Superduperman Mad story I read prior where Obvious cartoon parody versions of Superman and Shazam/captain mArvel were being jerks. These looked like the actual characters! (thanks to Bill Elder's skill)

There was a one shot in the 87 from Ocean Comics (??) that was cool.

I like it a great deal as well.. Perfectly cast and incredibly true to the original cartoon characters. Really don't understand why it's not a classic.Comment

I'll always like Popeye. I remember when I was hospitalized at age 5 and my mom bought me a Popeye Colorforms from the gift shop. And watching the cartoons at a young age burned Popeye into my memory forever.

I've always loved the live action movie! I've seen it over 30 times.
Why don't other people? I think the movie ends on a bit of a sour note - the whole climax is kind of messy and underwhelming compared to the rest. Writer Jules Feiffer has discussed how they had to rework the ending to get it finished - the production bled money like crazy and they were way over budget. (from memory) it had a higher reported budget than The Empire Strikes Back - to give some perspective.
The producer Robert Evans laments what happened with Popeye in his autobiography "The Kid Stays In The Picture". He thinks they came close to creating a masterpiece - but they just missed a few breaks during the production. I think he's right - had things worked a little differently it might have been a classic.Comment
