It's going to be written by Roger Langrige who's been doing sow great muppet and Thor comics of late, not to mention his creator owned SnarkEd.
Looks like he's really digging back into to old timey Segar stuff. I don't think Castor Oil has been seen in decades.

I'm glad you guys like it - but I'm not thrilled. I'm a huge Popeye fan - and I love Segar - but this just feels like flat-out mimicry to me.
The drawings are using Segar's character designs, but the poses all look stiff and the linework is lifeless.
Langrige might be a great writer (I haven't read anything else he's done yet) but I think having Castor walk in and set up the plot with exposition like that is dull. Segar always found interesting ways to set up his story while other things were going on so the audience would be pulled in.
I don't think a search for another Jeep is the most original idea for a new Popeye adventure. It doesn't seem very imaginative to me.Comment

Glad to see him back and in classic form instead of some goofed up modern hipster crapola. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

the article also mentions the return of Ham Gravy, Olive's original boyfriend in the pre-Popeye Thimble Theatre strip.
nobody does the feet in the air shock gag like Segar.

I have to admit, one of my favourite Popeye eras was Bobby London's strips circa the 80's.
loved Sagendorf's restrospective book as a kid as well.
recent homage in Bela Lugosi's comic.

Ed - I totally forgot that I don't have you on Facebook! I'm so sorry this is so last minute!
If you're looking for something to do tonight, my wife is having a thing at the Free Times Cafe (320 College St.) called Popeye and Soul.
We play classic cartoons along side classic soul, funk and R&B - and there's a special soul food menu the proprietor prepares with drink specials etc...
Anyone who loves cartoons in Toronto - please feel free to join us!Comment

I have a great fondness for Bela! Did You Eat? brunch/klezmer on Sundays at the Freetimes, though I haven't been for ages.Last edited by samurainoir; Jan 20, '12, 4:11 PM.Comment

It should go pretty late - but it will just depend on how late people want to stay. You have Ossana's cell, right? Give us a ring after the play if you want to have a drink!
I should have known you'd know Free Times - you literally seem to know everything! I basically live next door and hang out there all the time.Comment
