I finally saw X-Men: First Class

What a great movie. I know, I know, I should have seen it in theaters. There are only so many summer movie opportunities. And in a summer booked full of new comic adaptations, a 5th X-Men movie was low on the totem pole.

But again, this is a great movie. So much better than X3 and Wolverine (which I still enjoyed, despite their obvious flaws). Casting was spot-on, story was riveting. The effects were well done and NOT distracting or over-CGIed.

Loved the two little cameos (especially the first one!). How that was not spoiled for me in all the threads on this movie I have no idea.

I still put Captain America at the top of this year's summer movie heap, but I think I have to place this right behind it.

It is a surprisingly good flick, just wished they had re-booted and used the the originally 5 line-up.

I fully agree. I think X-M:FC was the biggest surprise of the superhero genre in theaters for 2011. I went in expecting very little and came out very pleased. Everyone does a fine job with their roles, though I agree, I wish they would've just stuck with the original five X-Men for the sake of continuity, but I guess they thought they needed characters who were "flashier" to draw people into the theaters. One certain character's cameo was completely unexpected, but so well played that the entire theatre applauded at the showing MIB41 and I were at.

James McAvoy did a really great job as a young and slightly arrogant and playful Xavier and the movie at least showed us the reason's why Raven sided with Erik in the later films. My only complaint was that I think they crippled Charles too quickly and made he and Erik enemies to quickly. That was a story that needed to simmer to get the full flavour of it, perhaps coming to a head in a third movie (if they plan a reboot trilogy).

My fave in the whole movies was Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto. He owned every minute he was on the screen (except, perhaps, when he put the helmet on, then he looked a little silly). I would've gone to see a movie just about Lehnsherr and his crusade against the Nazi's with Fassbender playing that role.

I posted in another thread that it's actually too bad he did play such a fantastic Magneto, because I think there's another Marvel villain he could nail so well, fanboys would be wetting themselves and that would've been Victor Von Doom....!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

It was amazing!!! I could watch it all the time.

Do you know why I liked it so much? Aside from the great acting, direction, etc? I had no idea what was going to happen! It was a completely original story. And it was very well told. I hope they do another like it.

I got the wife the Blu Ray for Christmas. We thoroughly enjoyed this one too. The way Magneto was portrayed was outstanding IMO. You feel for him even though you know how absolutely ruthless he is / can be. Plus the fellow playing Professor X was charming and fun but yet serious and straight forward. Excellent movie!

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm picking up a copy at Best Buy today thanks to a Christmas gift card. Looking forward to watching it.

This slightly edged out Cap America for my favorite comic movie this year. Great stuff. Thor was pretty good, but hokey. Green Lantern was...a disappointment. Conan was abysmal.

Strange summer for movies. I had no intention of seeing First Class, and it became my favorite. Looking forward to next year.

For the record, Thor was my favorite film of 2011. It had great characterization. A terrific cast as well. Thor and Loki were perfect.

Thor and Loki were indeed perfect...and all the Asgard scenes were awesome...one of the best ever seen...had that been a stand-alone film...it would've been better than First Class for sure.

However...the Earth scenes were a big letdown for me (aside from annoying Natalie Portman)...it felt like a low-budget flick. Instead of a dusty little town...it should've taken place in a big city. That was my one critical part of Superman 2...General Zod and his cronies, fighting a couple of jeeps and a helicopter in some dusty Texas town. I mean...that's how they defeated all of Earth's forces?...lol.

In First Class...the way Magneto stops and 180s all the incoming missiles...wow...now that was badarse indeed.
