"Challenge" is one of my all-time favorite cartoons and one of those that seems fondly remembered by people I talk to in our age group even if they don't follow super heros in any fashion currently.

Against the grain as usual, but I never really liked this version. For me it got awfully boring awfully fast going up against the same group of villains after the same thing every week, world domination and destroying the SuperFriends. The first 2 versions are my faves.

I love the All New SuperFriends Hour myself. It was my first SuperFriends series. Besides, I was able to get a double Batman fix in the late 70's. I could enjoy them on the SuperFriends on ABC and then catch the 77 Filmation version w/ BatMite on the Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour on CBS.
Cheers.Comment

couldn't stand the show until it went to Challenge, then it finally felt more like a superhero comic and less like the preachy environmental show that it started out as.You must try to generate happiness within yourself. I still would have liked for Super Powers to have lasted a few more years. DC was getting ready to do Crisis by that point.Comment

I would have liked to have seen Super Powers: Galactic Guardians continue too. Of course Dick Grayson was still Robin despite becoming Nightwing in the comics, and Flash was dead by the time the final episode of SP:GG aired, so I don't think current continuity had much to do with it.
I wish the 80s Teen Titans series would have gotten off the ground, although apparently Robin wouldn't have been a part of it due to his place on the Super Friends. They brought Cyborg over to SP once this show was shelved.

I loved the Garcia-Lopez design work on that show. What a good looking cartoon. Hanna-Barbara showed everyone that they could do that look just as well as Filmation. I wonder a little if that may have been part of the problem. They used more expensive animation on it and it may have bloited the production cost to high to continue.Comment

I've been watching this series for a few hours on Youtube now, and they're really good! Definitely my favorite version of the SF series (besides Galactic Guardians. Getting Adam West to voice Batman was beyond awesome!). Watching the Super Friends fight the Legion of Doom was pretty damn cool. I was also pleasantly surprised that we saw so many origins in the series (still need to see The Fear though, Batman's story). I'll be sure to buy the DVDs. This series rocks!sigpic

It would have been interesting to have seen a Batman spinoff right on the heels of GG but at least the Timm version was worth the wait. (and a long wait it was)
I still want to blame crisis for it, lol
Unrelated but still toon goodness is Hanna Barbaras Galtar supposively done by the same group as GG. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZP0s9lS2k0Comment

And here's a fun fact: The episode was written by Alan Burnett, later a story editor on Batman: The Animated Series.sigpic

There was a season where all the adventures centered around literature — Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, Alice in Wonder land and Wizard Oz. Is that season out on DVD? Those were pretty good episodes. If Super Friends were on today there might be one-offs of Hunger Games, Twilight and Harry Potter.Comment

Nope. That is "The World's Greatest Super Friends" and it's not on DVD. That is one of my favorite seasons. Besides the ones you mentioned, there is a Frankenstein episode, and an Arabian Nights-based story as well. Plus, my absolute favorite SF episode of all-time, "Universe of Evil", which doesn't really fit the theme that season...but who cares!

My favs include Universe of Evil, "Uncle Mxy", and the secret origin of the superfriends.
Heres hoping that if a JLA film is made, it will give the studios a chance at another teamup style show. I want something closer to challenge without getting to much like JLU. I definately want a more traditional approach in the animation.
Time to put WGSF on dvd. Great season, no reason not to.Comment
