    The Challenge Of The Superfriends.

Ok. It's Satuday. I have the house to myself. I have spent the whole afternoon printing repro card backs and watching "The Challenge Of The Superfriends". Been a pretty great day!

On a side note, I really loved the Legion Of Doom.

Challenge of the Superfriends is probably the best version. I also like Worlds Greatest Superfriends (which i dont think is on dvd) and Superpowers/Galactic Guardians. Basically superfriends, filmation batman, and the hulk tv show were my introduction to superheroes.

Yep, Challenge is defnitely a high-water mark for SF. The episodes in general hold up better than most, and there are some genuinely cool moments in there. The scope was huge, even if the creators played fast in lose with the characters and common sense. The theme to an SF show still gets me pumping. It's the ideal that all super hero comics should live up to.

"World's Greatest" is I think the only version NOT on DVD. It was a very good season, with some imaginative recasting of the SF in classic literature, and the single greatest SF episoed (IMHO) "Universe of Evil".

I never understood in "Universe of Evil" why out SFs didn't have Kryptonite to use against the evil Superman. That made no sense to me even back then. Yoo bad they never produced another episode where they went back like Superman promised.

I don't have the World's Greatest season....but yes. I always love parallel universe stuff.

(Star Trek: Mirror Mirror is simply awesome)

On a side note....how bout "evil" Robin's creepy mustache in that episode?

How funny. I spent the weekend watching Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. I'll have to find the DVD's of those older series, I've heard that they were good (I mean of the COTSF series).

I think in the pre-paranoid DCU, the SF would have never thought to have armed themselves in case Superman turned evil for whatever reason. Batman should have known he could go the Fortress and get some samples from the K-vault, but then it's SF, so logic doesn't quite enter into it.

I wish they would have shown them going back and taking care of the Super Enemies. And I loved all of their costumes! All red, longer-eared Batman! Pirate Aquaman! Haggy Wonder Woman! Goateed Robin! And Satanic Superman!!!

"Challenge" was always my favorite incarnation of the Super Friends. That being said, I always snickered at the obvious rip off of the villain's spaceship/headquarters that ironically looked like Darth Vader's helmet. Fun stuff though.

What I like to call the "Saturday Morning Era" of the DC Comics Classic Cartoons, are the series produced by studios prior to Warner Bros for the Saturday morning lineups. This includes Filmation, Hanna Barbera, and Ruby Spears. The good news is, MOST (not all) of these shows are now on DVD. Although Warner Home Archives has said they will eventually release all of them, the truth is, they haven't. The year 2011 has been a very dry year with no classic DC animated releases.
As far as the SuperFriends go, you're right. The World's Greatest SuperFriends is one of the three seasons not on DVD. Yet, it should be. Highly sought after. Other than that, the shorts made in 1980 and 1981 are not out, yet the Lost Episodes of 1983 are. Strange indeed.
As far as Filmation goes, all we need are the original Batman cartoons from 1968, the remaining episodes of the Filmation Superman made in 1967 and 1968 and the complete Superboy series. And I must not forget Shazam. And as for Ruby Spears, we have the best of the Plastic Man series. Though I don't like Baby Plas at all, the Plastic Family and Baby Plas shows would be good for those who are serious completionists. I honestly wish Warner Home Video would make some announcement soon.
                      Cheers.

totally agree. they are missing one of the best superfriends seasons. the other cartoons you mention are good to.

I don't have the "Lost Episodes" set yet, so I assumed the 80 and 81 seasons were on that, but I guess it's just the episodes that really were "lost" to American viewers while these played overseas, right?

"World's Greatest" desperately needs to be on DVD. I finally got the Filmation Aquaman DVD set this Christmas, and was watching the Aquaman history featurette. It showed some clips from that season, and that DVD was released YEARS ago.

this sort of helps clarify when what was released. all the seasons were always messed together when i was growing up.
dont think i ever saw the "lost episodes"
